I think I read that if you find work experience connected to your third level course you can continue receiving BTEA during summer months. Anybody know how many hours a week minimum you have to work? I have an opportunity to work somewhere that is 25-30 miles away but I couldn't afford to drive there five days a week.

The work experience has to be an integral part of the course, i.e. you must partake on this work experience to allow you to graduate, in order to keep your BTEA over the summer period.
Is this the type of work experience you will be doing? Or will it be a work experience job outside of your college course?

Thanks for your reply. It is experience in a radio station and I am currently participating by submitting materal for broadcast from a distance, ie. recording a show at home and sending it to them. I am doing media in college and it most certainly is an excellent opportunity to gain a hands on grasp of how the station operates day to day. Btw due to my age I expect to be exempt for an off campus placement in third year

    Any other opinion on this?

Just reiterating the information already given:

You may get BTEA during the summer if you are on work placement or work experience that is an essential part of your course.

From personal experience, no. Unless your college can give you a letter saying this work experience is essential, ie you are being graded on it and you will not graduate without it, then you will not be entitled. You also cannot claim JSA and do the work experience for free - this leaves you unavailable for work and thus not entitled to JSA any longer.
However, I did read somewhere that you can work over the Summer and continue to claim BTEA for the next college year, but the BTEA would obviously be means-tested. Don't quote me on that though. Might be worth looking into, since maybe this work experience would be willing to pay you JSA rates?
