Play.com are closing down their retail arm with the closing of the loophole that made purchases of £15 or less from the Channel Islands VAT exempt.

I am sure there will be a good clearance sale.

PS mods I know this is not strictly a BA but it is information that I am sure many would appreciate being made aware of.

But that was before this announcement.

Sad to see them go. I think they were the first Internet site I ever purchased from (back when everyone thought it was madness to reveal your credit card details to a website).

  • Aren't Zavvi, TheHut and MyMemory all based in Jersey too?

Yup. Maybe they're willing to still operate and pay the tax bill too. Then again, this loophole was closed months ago. It's only now that they are winding up.

For me too, think though in the last 3 or 4 years they went to the dogs, really bad Pound to Euro conversion and pricing wasn't competitive. Amazon will be the big winners here.

Yes and I think HMV's online sales too.

I was astounded. I was asked to by two CDs of a certain artist online for Christmas, on their behalf. I looked at Amazon, HMV, the usuals, and they all were expensive.

Then, my first order on Play, and I got the two of them, and delivered to Ireland, for €10.99.
    Outstanding.

Not hard to know why they were cheap

Nope, The Hut group (Zavvi) have left Jersey too and have moved to Chicago, USA of all places.
Pretty nifty way to get around the £15 no VAT rule.

"Play.com will now become more like a shopping centre, no longer selling directly to customers."

Is it just me or does that statement make no sense.

  • I take it as meaning they'll be allowing other vendors, such as ZOverstock, to sell from their site but not themselves?

My local shopping centre certainly sells direct to me.

I think they are hoping to become a sort of eBay.

No it doesn't. The shops within it do.

I don't see what the problem is. The should just follow in the example of sites like Amazon, who seem to do fairly well while still paying their taxes.

Wait... 'Amazon'... 'taxes'.... that rings a bell.

    *googles*

    Ah, nevermind.

    Thanks for the heads-up kn..

.. but like you said, this isn't strictly a Bargain Alert.

There's an ongoing discussion in the games forum here for those who are interested.

    Closed!
