Law - Corvids with Rifle

Does anyone know what the story is, I've searched but older threads don't clear it up.
I know it's common practice, G-Crows and M-Pies, I do it as does everyone but what does the law say about shooting birds on the ground with a rifle.
I'm asking to settle a huge bet with a friend (€5) and I believe there was some controversy about it a while back. Not talking game etc
    Thanks in advance

    i have found this

    http://www.irishstatutebook.ie/2000/en/act/pub/0038/sec0041.html#sec41

My reading of it is as follows. it is ok to shoot any non protected wild bird with a rifle ie magpie, grey crow .(Perhaps with out a silencer on though)

For fairness sake i should point out i am in the bet .

As far as I know, and I'm open to correction on this, you can shoot corvids with either shotgun, rifle or air rifle between the 1st of september and 31st of january without any problem, but outside of these dates you can only shoot them if you are protecting your crops or doing same for farmer at their request.

You are quiet correct - both rifles and shotguns can be used on the corvids listed in the derogations.

True - you can shoot corvids with either shotgun, rifle or air rifle, if you are protecting your crops or they are a public health hazard.

You can do it the whole year around - not just between the 1st of september and 31st of january - EU Derogation allowing it comes out every 4 months.....as soon as it runs out it's renewed.....so technicaly lasts all year round

This attachment is last years - can't find recent one...but they're all the same, just different dates.

however you are not allowed use a silencer on birds -

    Wildlife Act (Ammendment) 2000

    Section 41

    (1) It shall be an offence for a person to hunt or injure in the course of hunting—
    (a) with a repeating or automatic shotgun (other than a repeating or automatic shotgun which is adapted or modified so as to render it incapable of carrying more than three shotgun cartridges), with an airgun, air-rifle, gas-rifle, pistol or revolver, or with any firearm fitted with a silencer device, any wild bird,

So mags and greys can be shot year round as well as trapped.

That would be my reading of it - anybody could argue that, without doubt, greycrows & magpies definitely cause damage the whole year round.

With rooks , pigeons & jackdaws they would need to be attacking a crop before they could be shot.

So if you have a sound suppressor on your rifle you can't shoot crows or magpies with it,it makes no sense, A sound suppressor still leaves a bit of noise so you won't be able to pick off everyone in the field like?

No, what it means is that you can't shoot any protected bird with any kind of firearm, which under EU law, is every bird. And having banned everything, they then allow exceptions for some birds for some periods of time with some firearms (that's what the derogation order does). If the derogation order allowed you to use suppressors, you could use them; if not, you can't.
