    hi there,

I was looking into a course at NUIG called Business Information Systems. It looks really interesting but I was wondering what kind of people do this course? Is it mostly male/female or mature students? I'll be a 19 year old girl going into college and I just wanted to find out would there be many more doing the course my age?

    Thanks :)

Going by my own experience (me being a second year BIS student) there is about a 3:1 ratio divide with regards gender in favour of males, but that is actually very good considering the type of degree it is. There was only about 6 mature students out of 43 when the course started and that has widdled its way down to 3 in second year. Pretty much everyone else coming into first year was aged 17-20, so that should be no problem for you.

Hope that answers your question, if you have any more questions about BIS don't be hesitant to shout! :)

No problem at all! I think it's an excellent course, it's always something that interested me too and now I'm glad I do it, I enjoy what we cover and it's all very useful. BIS' employment record at NUIG is almost flawless too, great in terms of career prospectus if that matters to you... I would of course recommend it to anyone with your interests, I'm sure you'd enjoy it.

Not to mention, I am going out on exchange in two weeks time to HKUST in Hong Kong down to taking this course and doing well in it; HKUST is ranked best in Asia and 33rd in the world in the QS University Rankings, which is phenomenal in the context, so you can imagine what an opportunity like that can do for you! You can go all across the world on exchange with this course, numerous courses in America, plus Sweden, France, UK, and abviously Hong Kong.

There is quite a recent thread on BIS already here that was posted a couple of months ago, have a look at it and see if it answers any more questions you may be wish to ask, if not give me a shout and I'll be glad to help. :)

Hi Nailz, is there an info page, on Facebook, or the NUIG website for B.I.S

Hi Timmyctc, here is the BIS section from NUIG's website, use the navigation menu on the left to explore different components of the course and other such things, pretty much all the information you need with regards the degree is there.

    Hi there,

I am trying to decide between this coure (BIS) and CS&IT, both in NUIG. From what i can see at the moment - BIS is split down the middle between IT subjects such as programming, data systems etc & then Business subjects such as Accounting, Analysis etc.

I'm aware that CS&IT delves right down to the nuts and bolts of Computational theories, but I'm wondering if BIS goes into great detail on the IT subjects or simply "skims the top"?

From my experience it's not really split down the middle as much as you think, I see it as more of a 7:3 ratio in favour of the IS subjects, but it's true that there is a degree of depth being sacrificed with regards IS/IT where the business aspects come in. But that should go without saying; no one should expect to add a whole new perspective to an IS course and not remove some of the detail already involved.

In my opinion, not much of the IS content is missing from the course that could have been included, it by no means skins the surface. In all honesty, if you want to do an IS/IT course but are not interested in studying business principles with that then doing CS/IT would be ideal for you; otherwise, with the inclusion of business principles along with IS then BIS the obvious way to go. Of course, you choice is entirely up to you, depending on what you're looking to do.

Hi I am also thinking of doing this course next year , and I was wondering is it the same as b.i.s in cork ? I live in the Munster region so would be handier for me to go there but don't think I'll get the points so wondering would it be worth going all the way to Galway as the ucc one sounds really good so basically just wondering if they are the same ? :P

I'm in final year BIS in NUIG.
I have to say I've loved the course from start to finish.
I'd highly recommend it. You come out of the college with a great skill set.

The classes are mostly small but you are also in with commerce for certain subjects. The benefit of the small classes is that one gets to know their lecturers really well, which is great.

The course is also very well funded and therefore we have access to rooms which are just for BIS students. Two PC Labs, 1 Mac Lab and a study/ lecture room.

The latter two are also equipped with Smart Boards which are great for team work.

All I can say is choose BIS, you will not be disappointed!

To be honest I really don't know, unless someone has done both courses then I don't anybody could give you a decent answer, but the BIS in NUIG is EPAS accredited by the European Foundation for Management Development, which basically means we're class. ;)

Seriously though, this is what the EPAS accreditation is and why it should be relevant in choosing the course you want to do. This course is the only EPAS accredited bachelor programme in the country and is a world renowned standard in this sector of education, very good in terms of employment prospects as well.
