    ok I've been stupid,
my car was out of NCT for a full year, I got caught and now I'm up in court next week. I dont really have much of an excuse, car was out of action for couple of months, but I got lazy and low on money and never really worried about it.

Its not much of a defence really and I'm sure the judge will cop that too,
    any advice?
do i just suck it up and hope for the best?
any ideas of the normal penalty?

I presume at this stage you have either sold or NCT'd the car. This will be in your favour.

Hopefully you took a copy of the cert. before you sold the car so you can show the judge that (1) you acted immediately to be compliant and (2) it shows that the car wasn't a banger and hence a danger to the public. That will be your mitigation plea.

Not sure if 'yes' above applies also to MagicSean's query as to whether you had sold the car or not.
