I have just sold a car to a buyer from NI.

I have the buyers full details, who do I need to contact to let them know its no longer in the State?

Write a short account of the transaction on a yellow postit note and hand it to a priest in the confessional box of the nearest church....

Is it safe to assume that you did get the buyer to fill out the transfer of ownership on the reverse of the vehicle registration certificate and that you retained this document for posting to the Vehicle Registration Office in Shannon.

This is wrong informaton - you do NOT retain the VLC when you are selling it out of the State. The buyer will require it to re-reg it in N.I.

Just as when Irish people buy cars in N.I. or UK, and you need the V5C from there to register it here, the reverse is true - you MUST give the VLC to the buyer.

All you have to do is drop a note to Shannon with the details and date of the transaction - that's it.

I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

My hands are up. I'm Sorry.
What happens then if the VLC was sent to Shannon with the Northern Ireland address?

I retained no documentation at all, gave it all to the buyer but I am still in contact with him if I need any of it back.

After a bit of reading it appears that a letter to Shannon will probably do the job, as galwaytt said. If they need anything else they can get back to me.

    Thanks all.

Shannon keeps no records of vehicles exported at all. I had this problem a few years ago when I exported my own car to Germany and re registered it there. As far as Shannon were concerned the car was still live on their system and there were tax and nct reminders coming for quite a long time.

If you enter the reg on motortax.ie it still shows up as being active with no changes.

    no problem, all good :)

...I'm not sure what happens tbh - I think it more likely you'll hear from the buyer, first, when he tries to re-reg the car up there. Unless you want to drop him a line and ask him, I'd just leave it be for now.

If this is the case, who gets speeding fines if the car is caught speeding by an automatic speed camera in the RoI?

Thats the only reason I am sending the letter, don't want to get done for speeding or dangerous driving int he future!

The last owner that Shannon has recorded will keep getting any letters such as speeding and eflow.

So if someone made up a plate for a car that has been exported and misbehaves the last person will take the flak for it.

....that's why give the export details to Shannon.........sending them the VLC doesn't affect it's likelihood to be cloned.........

They don't care. You stay as the registered owner forever.

.....kinda. The name on the VLC is not the legal owner: he/she/they are the registered 'keepers' of it.

Your name may be on the VLC, but as in Hire Purchase arrangements, you don't own that car, either, until the last payment is made (#24/#36/48#60etc).

When you export a car, Shannon should - should - delist it from NVDB. But as you say, they don't 'care' :)

I agree they should be delisted but they are not. I could give you several exported regs and you will still find them on the NVDF.

Technically, what should happen is that the new registration centre (in whatever Country) would send the VLC back to Ireland when the car is registered in the new owner's name.....thus showing the car as exported.
This doesn't always happen, so the advice to send a note to shannon is good...also no harm for both buyer and seller to complete some type of receipt with details of chassis no. etc. and each keep a copy.
