last rally I went to had dealers selling used stuff for approx 3x the going rate on ebay.

I could die easy knowing i'd never visit another!

true there is one or two who shocked me he had a yaseu frg7700 for 325 euro
Picked mine up for 150 on adverts but I did get a lovely yaseu 757gx for pennies in enniskillen last year, made the trip worth it.
I try to stay away from the dealers and go for the bring and buy stands etc.

heres a tip for anyone wanting it.
Go to gumtree uk and search for radio gear email the person asking can they ship with parcelforce only 30 euro theres lots and lots of used stuff there.

Looks like it was a mistake or Limerick have changed their date. But I notice now it is the day after the Lagan Valley rally.

The only value of the Rallies is to eyeball people. Though occasionally I have got the odd item making the entry fee worth while.

I had an FRG7700. Not impressed. I collect old radios and I'd expect to get most of a 19 set for 150 Euro, I'd not pay that for one, certainly not €325!

I think people in Ireland have unrealistically high 2nd valuations, maybe people prepared to pay it. I see current or near current S/H models listed in Ireland at close to the discount price you could import a new one for.

Same with vintage radios, people here seem to be looking up to x5 the UK price and up to x3 the German prices.

Ive had two frg 7700 great rigs and I paid 150 for both of them 3 years apart.
I seen that one for 325 I nearly choked. there was a few other gems twice the price as well.
Some of the stuff out there is seriously overpriced not everyone can afford Lamco prices on secondhand gear!!!

Has anyone ever bought from the states some real bargain over there Im just worried about shipping and taxes doubling the price

Comparing Ireland, UK and the states I think gear is way over priced in all three places. Surprisingly enough I think the UK has the most expensive secondhand rigs.

Some of the secondhand gear has been to more rallies than I have

Yep a fiver and then you still have to pay for a cuppa, it is expensive ok.

'tis true what they say about trying to separate hams from their money

    HAM = Hasn't Any Money?

But look at the price of HF rigs! :)

Ham always can get money when it comes to a new radio.

I think that's because new prices are so high there.. A few times when I was buying a rig I checked ML&S but they were way higher than street prices in Holland or Germany, sometimes as much as 20% more. I don't know any other retailers there but if they're all priced so high I can imagine this increase filtering down to second hand pricing.

Ireland even higher S/H than UK due to even higher new prices, not just related to VAT. I bought sometimes from Netherlands, new, same spec as UK/Irish market cheaper than Irish S/H prices!

You have to be careful buying electronics from abroad as the Hardware or Firmware may be different and not able to be changed or even totally incompatible with a same basic model number (TVs especially).

can you provide any good store locations/names abroad?

I will have a couple of HF rigs up for sale shortly or will try and bring them to the next rally at Coolmine...

Yaesu FT-990 DC, with 250 & 500 Hz CW and 2.4 KHz SSB crystal filters fitted. This radio has the ATU fitted but is the DC model with ROM 1.2.
Yaesu FT-817ND, with 2.3 KHz Collins mechanical filter fitted
    Kenwood TS-711E 2M multimode

    Thanks
