I don't think they ever sold a Sport here in Ireland, SE sounds like a UK spec too which would have been similar to the Comfortline sold here. You might get a better answer though on a VAG owners forum. In the UK you had S, SE, Sport and SE-L afaik.

By logbook do you mean owners manual or vehicle registration cert?

Vrcs are only as good as the people in the office inputting the data, and an owners manual just mightn't be for the car.

In the owners manual there should be a sticker (possibly also in boot under carpet). Check the chassis number to your car (on the windscreen, near bonnet) and if it matches, there are around 15 other codes (eg ACH, DFT etc.)

Using this info, as someone suggested, hit one of the vag forums and you'll find out exact model and factory extras.

And i dont think you could get a six speed se

its a uk car and says SE in the actual logbook or reg cert, checked the sticker in back but cant make anything out on it,
its totally genuine car otherwise and all matches up... i think it could be just a SE but didnt think these came with with a six speed box..
i know the sport and sometimes the highline models did

as in you can read it but it's gobaldy-goop, or it's totally worn and illegible?

    here's a VIN decoder: http://www.dubnetworks.net/vw-vin-decoder.htm

    Here's an options decoder: http://igorweb.org/equidec/

the sticker will look somewhat like this (ignore the red)

Ring VW with the chassis number and they will tell you what model it is. I wouldn't pay too much attention to what it says on the logbook, particularly if it is an import.
