Peugeot 206 1.1 LX Misfiring

Hi all, I'm driving a 2001 1.1 206 and its started misfiring pretty bad all of a sudden (engine light is on in the dash too).

I've read up about the problem online and found it could be a number of things from worn plugs to head gasket failure.

I was just looking for your thoughts on the problem and where to start in regards to diagnosing the problem and fixing it.

    Thanks in advance!

Just a bit of an update. Went to the shop there and it started and drove crap. Then it was fine again until the way back from the shop so its intermittent. The engine light was on all the time though.

Would this mean its the coil pack acting up?

Drove crap as in fine for a bit, then sudden loss of power then back on again etc? In my 206 it was the fuel injectors - I've had two fail and then another one a couple of months after, all in the last 16 months. Misfiring faults will usually show up in a diagnostics reading and even if you change the coil pack yourself you'll need a reset of the fault to make the engine diagnostic light go off

Sounds like the coil pack. It happened my wife's car last year (or year before now) and managed to get a second hand coil pack. it still has the odd moment, but its quite rare.
Can't remember how much it cost at the time sorry.

Yeah it was misfiring from start up and for about 80 meters then it was fine till I got to the shops which was about half a mile. Then started misfiring again on start up and for the trip back home.

If it is down to the injectors is it an expensive job?

This also only started happening since we had a lot of heavy rain here in Galway in the past 7 or 8 days. Could this be any link to whatever it is that failed?

I have a feeling it is that myself. Found 1 or 2 on ebay for around €40. More than likely spurious though. Will have to get in touch with a scrappy tomorrow and price them if this is definitely the problem.

The injectors are €72 a piece on MicksGarage but the labour on 'em can be hit and miss. How old is the car - as in what's the problem with spurious parts? The clutch is gone on my yoke at the minute but there's no OEM clutch kit going into it at her age :)

Well I suppose its 12 years old and only a temporary run around so whatever keeps it going for the next month i'm happy with.

I suppose its a bad idea to keep driving it the way it is till I replace whatever is broke?

My own is a 1.1LX with a 00 reg, coming up on 13 years itself; I'm way beyond caring what parts go into it except oil, brakes and tyres.

The coil pack is a quick swap and if I were on the road I'd offer you mine for testing but alas I'm not. I wouldn't advise driving on it in any case - the loss of power is a liability, the unburnt fuel (the injector's still putting it into the cylinder) will get burned off in the cat and can wreck it; costly enough for a new one

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,339 ✭✭✭brembo26

I was thinking it would effect the cat alright :p Ill get on the ball early tomorrow so and chance a coil pack from the scrappy if its the right price.

If it turns out not to be the problem i'm sure ill get a few quid for it again or just hang onto it as a spare or something.

    Thanks for the help!

    +1 on the coil pack.

Girlfriend has a 00 1.1 also. Same symptoms. The garage changed the ECU and throttle bodies one at a time but still misfire after car warmed up.

Put a second hand throttle body in and the car is perfect.

Garage looked after us, they are in Kildare so if thats any use PM me and I will tell you who they were.

Cheers, I'm in Galway though. I should get one at handy enough money in one particular place.

So obviously this is a common problem on these?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,885 ✭✭✭Tzardine

Would definitely appear so. Quite a cheap fix if its the coil pack thankfully.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,339 ✭✭✭brembo26

Got priced €40 for a second hand one off a scrappy so a bit of haggling ill probably get it for €35, I'm happy with that. :)

Did you get the code read?

Do that to see what it gives back.

EDIT: Actually you're in Galway, pop out to me and I'll scan it and read the code for you if you want :)

    Where abouts are ya? :)

Didnt get the code read, was just going to chance the coil pack seeing as it seems to be a common fault and the symptoms are matching up too?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,339 ✭✭✭brembo26

Coil pack changed and while there is an improvement shes still not 100%. Plugs could do with a change so ill do that now and hopefully problem solved!

    Still misfiring :(

Did you change the leads as well?

As I said pop out to me and I'll read the code for you, at least see what that suggests the problem may be.

The coil pack sits on top of the 4 plugs so there isnt any leads to be changed? As far as I can tell anyway?

Ya I might do that when you're available so.

    What fault codes were logged...?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,339 ✭✭✭brembo26

Cylinder #4 injector. Swapping the coil pack I got for 4 injectors so happy days :)

    P0204 I think it was?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,584 ✭✭✭TouchingVirus

Check the seals on the injectors when you remove/get them, I bought second hand once and it went in three weeks; turned out one of the rubber o-ring seals was torn. Always a good idea to have some spare too, I've one myself in a drawer at home :)

    Yep P0204.

I told ya you'd get injectors dirt cheap!!!

Pop out again when you get them changed : )

Remove the injectors and check them with a multimeter..You should be getting 14-16 omhs across each injector.
depending what year of 206 you have but some of the injector harnesses have cylinder 1 & 3 and 2 & 4 sharing grounds...so it maybe showing theres aproblem with cylinder 4 but it maybe a problem with cylinder 2 /injector.
Compare resistance on all 4 injectors and report back...;)

Went to fire up the multimeter, broken. :p Is it difficult to remove the injectors? Just had a quick look at them and didnt see any obvious way to do it. Are they just screwed in?

Also Im hearing there are 3 different types of injectors. How do I know which ones ill be looking for? From what I can see they are just shiny silver ones?

    Thanks everyone!

Remove the airfilter to air intake pipe and engine breather pipes, disconnect coil pack plug and any other plugs that are in the way.
unclip all four plugs on the injector harness (be careful as the clips on the injector harness plugs can unclip off the harness and fall down at the back of the engine..)
Disconnect fuel quick release connection from the fuel injector rail..(make sure ignition is turned off) there is a 10mm nut below the injector fuel rail (in the middle of the rail) that needs to be loosened/removed..once all the above has been removed the fuel rail with injectors attached should just pull out of the head and wiggle it out one side of the head...:)

    Thanks Row, thats very informative!

Cannot find my torx screw heads anywhere

Once again it looks like ill have to wait until tomorrow to get a set.

It looks quiet simple though so ill be confidant enough when I get at it tomorrow morning.
