I'm installing Ubuntu on a Dell Latitude D620, and I'm at the partitioning stage, should I use the EXT2, EXT3 or EXT4 option ??
/it's been a while since I used the partitioner so didn't even know EXT4 wasan option doh!

Ok I've gone and used EXT4 and it's my 1st look at the new Ubuntu, ie. quite different from my last install back in 2008

Any tips for a first-time Ubuntu installer? I'm getting my hands on an unwanted Windows machine in the next few days, & want to have a go at changing it over to Ubuntu. Haven't done this before - installing additional RAM would be about as advanced an upgrade as I've managed myself. Anything I should be looking out for, or common newbie mistakes?

(sorry for hijacking your thread btw...)

Ubuntu makes installing quite easy using the wizard and if you are not dual booting it's straight forward.. Follow the guides on the Ubuntu site to get it installed.. Fastest way is using a USB stick but you can use a cd also..

OP: From what I have gathered in the past (I don't know if this information is still valid, so don't quote me), ext3 should be used if you have a IDE drive and ext4 if you have a SATA drive. ext4 should work ok for you (as I used it when I was installing Linux Mint)

As U_Fig said, since Ubuntu 12.10 is now over 700MB, a regular CD won't do you anymore. You would either A) Have to use a DVD (Which is wasteful) or B) Use a USB stick/key that is 2GB+.

There is a easy option to dual boot Windows with Ubuntu now but it's not great. So, what I would suggest is to install Ubuntu on it's own.

If you need a easy way to burn a Ubuntu .iso to a USB...then you can use Rufus - It can only be used in Windows, but I find that tool to be brilliant at burning Ubuntu, other distros of Linux and Windows onto a USB stick/key.

It's only been like that since 12.10 (iirc) because of all the Unity stuff that is now included in the OS and they don't want to delete any more from the LiveCD. They could bring to under 700MB if they removed LibreOffice from the disk but they could do that in 13.04 or they might not do it at all.

Using a CD was slow as anyway USB installs so much faster especially USB 3.0
