tritium in watches

just wondering what posters here make of tritium in watches, do ye consider it a bit of a gimmick?

after looking at the poor mans marine master thread from a while back I started lusting after a watch like it - might even end up getting one or something like those quondams if it wasn't for the tritium

    I wanted

    an automatic movement
diver (unidirectional bezel would be nice but don't mind if it goes both ways)
    takes a leather strap well
nice lume (at the start this was super lumina but then i got hooked on the idea of tritium - perhaps combined with luminescent paint like in a ball spacemaster but not at that price)
+ would love a display case back but know that would probably not be possible in my price range with tritium [up to approx 400 euro])

also swiss movement would be nice but anything reputable fine and not a massively oversized watch

I was looking at brands like Deep Blue and MWC but just wondering is there some brand I'm overlooking with decent quality that do tritium?

+out of interest what do ye think of Deep Blue/MWC as brands?

Phew...sorry for all that but any help appreciated

Don't forget lum-tec if lum is the.important part, but you might have to go pre-owned at the price point.
I think Prometheus do tritium lum too

I say you can find a second hand Marathon for that price no problem.

I see if I can suggest something else..

Sorry I missed the part that you are looking for one with an automatic movement... That is not that easy than...

+1 on the second hand Marathon GSAR. Auto, built like a brick thingy and with tritium. As for the Tritium tubes, IMH it's the best lume there is by a long way. The various Luminovas don't come close. Well they're bright just after they've been charged but it fades very rapidly.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

Exactly as Wibbs said, but I`m afraid you wont find one at your price range, if you could reach up to 600-700 range than you could find decent GSAR models. In you price range you fin find really nice Swiss quartz (Ronda movement) models, new with warranty.

If you want a beater with tritium tubes I think a 200-300 Euro quartz with Sapphire crystal is an excellent choice. Ronda quartz movements are low maintenance with 10+ years of battery time. The tubes will loose glow in 10-15 years anyway and therefore you can have a budget watch what you can retire without regrets after 10 years of service...

My Polish friends will be releasing their Tritium watch shortly

Should come in at around 300 (or less) Euro.

Won't have a Swiss movement though, but a high grade Seagull (Chinese) automatic instead.

Tks for the replies guys......very, very helpful

that Gerlach looks like the kind of thing I want.......very pretty (to my eye at least)

Also sort of considering the quartz now...although I had my heart set on an automatic

maybe a quartz with tritium and a seiko automatic with a display case back....ooooh choices choices

Out of curiosity....what do ye think of Deep Blue as a brand? they have a diver at around the 800 euro mark that looks good to me (If I was tempted to stretch it budget wise) t100 day night ops

also kind of like those Vostok Europe Anchar watches

I've no experience or opinion of Deep Blue, but personally I wouldn't buy a VE Anchar (even though I do own two other VE watches)...they're mahoosive and IMO also somewhat overpriced for what they are

if you are considering quartz no harm to look at traser brand.

I was considering a Deep Blue myself but I came across these pics on another forum and it is making me give them a long close second look before I part with the cash.

The photo's are the property of watchtalkforum member Bczclone and to quote him from his post.

"It's supposedly a diver, which one would think would make it at home in the water. These are pictures of mine after owning it for three months. Mind you these are after I did my best to remove the rust on the watch. It's pitted with rust spots from fresh, not salt water."

Have you checked out Prometheus. Unfortunately they have discontinued the Jellyfish which I think checks all your boxes with a seiko movement. Used regularly used ones on forums; or you could look at the replacement model the Baiji which is nice and has a Seagull movement rather than a Seiko one
