Hey everybody i am eager to get into Neon Genesis Evangelion for the first time having heard great things and i am just wondering where is the best place to start.

i have ordered yesterday the NGE Omnibus edition for the mangas

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Neon-Genesis-Evangelion-3---1/dp/1421550792/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1357598615&sr=8-4

but i was also gonna buy: Evangelion 1.11 and Evangelion 2.22 on blu ray.

would it be best to start on the tv series first or am i ok with reading the manga books then going on the two recent movies ?

    I'd recommend:

    Neon Genesis Evangelion (TV Show)
    End of Evangelion (Movie)
    Evangelion 1.11
    Evangelion 2.22
Evangelion 3.0 / Final when they emerge

It's the order they were released in, but it also makes the most sense in terms of following the story. I don't think you'll get the most out of the Rebuild films by just jumping straight into them, but if you're unwilling to commit to a whole TV series they'll help you decide whether you like the tone, story and characters. But would definitely go NGE first if possible.

might hope for the best and see can i get online tomorrow.

When I picked up the Series DVD from America, a few years ago, they were dual region (1 & 2) which was a nice surprise when it arrived as I assumed it was region 1 only.

    http://www.amazon.com/Neon-Genesis-Evangelion-Perfect-Collection/dp/B0000639E0/ref=sr_1_12?ie=UTF8&qid=1357748177&sr=8-12&keywords=neon+genesis+evangelion

Thats the set I got, obviously can't say for sure that if you got it now it would be dual region.

But as above I would certainly watch in that order. And also, it's awesome.

    bar the last 2 episodes

Luckily there's a little something called End of Evangelion - one of the most ambitious, complex and surprisingly underrated animated films ever produced - to sort that one out ;)

I actually still have End of Evangelion to watch. i watched the entire series when it aired on ANN(Or was it Anime Central) and wwatched Death and Rebirth a couple years ago. But never got around to watching End.

So must do that then start on the movies. But thinking of leaving the movies until they're all released. So maybe by the end of this year

About the 2007- remake movies, are they exact remakes and polished up versions or do they actually alter the plot and add stuff?

The first one is little more than a spruced up retread of the first couple of episodes of NGE. It's looks nice and all, but its sort of redundant, and the additions are mostly minor.

The second one shares some similarities with the original, but starts going in really interesting and unexpected directions. The second half of the film particularly delivers some real surprises and meaningful changes, and the ending is astonishing.

Haven't seen 3.0 yet, but the consensus seems to be it's a massive deviation from the TV show.

Is the manga worth picking up? I've heard it's more an adaptation of the tv show (rather than the usual other way around), so does it reveal anything new or is it really Anno's baby and his work is considered the definitive?

And what about the manga spin-offs (Angelic Days, Shinji Ikari Raising Project), do they add to the story or are they more a non-canon exploration of the Evangelion world?

    Spinoffs. Not really.

The Manga has its own worth and can be an interesting story in its own right. Especially since its winding down towards a conclusion after nearly 20 years.

Read the doujinshi work Re-Take by Studio Kimigabuchi.

There's the regular release (with porn) and an All-Ages version, all versions fully scanlated.

They really complement the canon and go in interesting (and sometimes fascinatingly horrid) directions.

Also, if you're a Mahou Sensei Negima fan, Studio Kimigabuchi did a series (Negimaru 1-5) which was so good it was directly referenced in the manga.
