just had both front tyres replaced today on my wifes car and the tyre fitters said the pads are almost gone (about 2mm left)

Just checked last service which was 20,000km ago and they were replaced

I would have thought you would get longer out of pads than this?

Her driving style has not changed much in the 5yrs of ownership and we have had pads last 40,000km at stages

Could be crap pads with poor material

The ole lad has close to 50k miles on the factory pads in his car, he's getting a CV joint this week so they'll be changed than me thinks, probably a bit left on them still though.

20k kms seems looney short for pads, have you had a peak at them yourself?

That sounds very poor mileage. I get 24k miles out of a set and I regard that as heavy use.

Are you sure they were changed at that last service? Alternatively, maybe there is something partially siezed in the brakes and pads are not wearing as even as they should.

First set normally last longer. Don't know if you got the main dealer to fit the second set or were they aftermarket .but manufacture ones last longer. Also get a second opinion on the worn pads . Not saying that you could be done but tyre centres have a habit of finding extra work.

I get 2 sets of pads for every one set of shoes....so about 20kkms seems normal enough, using mintex vehicle in question is a berlingo

Prob just crap pads put in, I got a set before that were so bad they needed alot of effort to hold the car on a steep hill. Whipped tyem out and aleays use ebc pads and shoes now.

Normally only a few euro dearer than spurious one's. On a avensis there cheaper. They work much better and last longer

Current car still on orginal set of pads after 130000k lots of motorway driving however I am getting them changed shortly.

20k is short, but I'd have a look myself. I was told before by a tyre place my pads were nearly gone, they were good for another few years...

Short but not unusual. I only got 25k kms out of a set on the Outlander.

This wasn't a national chain of tyre fitters by any chance was it?

I don't think I've ever been in one where I wasn't told my pads needed changing, even only when just in getting a puncture repaired. One time I was told I needed an entire front suspension replacement and he could order all the parts for me there and then if I wanted, to the tune of only approx. €650. I told him I'd have a think about it and let him know...

I'd have a look at the pads yourself hen you get a chance and ascertain whether they were chancing their arm or not.

I would consider 30, 000km average wear and expect front pads to be changed at that mileage.

    Anything above is a bonus!

That mileage is based on what I see everyday too.

Do you know where the brake pedal is?:D

Only messing, My father used to change passat every 3 years and never needed pads covering about 50k miles. The last car he kept 5 years and still didnt need any pads.

60%+ is motorway driving so not much braking, I prefer to do all the braking in one good wallop rather than ride the brakes for 100's of meters like most people plus I also watch the traffic ahead so I start slowing before I need to brake. ;)

An Audi main dealer and a well known tyre fitting company have seen the car and brakes and were happy with them but they are due a change.

Same here I only replaced my second set of pads recently as I upgraded my brakes, still plenty on the second set, car has over 260,000km mainly motorway.

    thought that myself

on the opposite side of it. years ago on my areox 50cc moped i used to go through a set every 2 months. front one month rear the next. so every month i had to change them. get it down to quarter of a hour tested an all

Ahh come on, its an open discussion! my brakes are bigger! ;)

Once had a tyre fitter tell me my rear pads were below 50% and fronts had virtually nothing left. Dunno whether he was planning on selling me some or not but I just said I was planning on servicing it myself in a couple of weeks so I'd do it then. Ordered a full set of pads, went to change them only to find rears were virtually new and fronts had about 60% left
