i am having trouble connecting my DVD player (Aiwa) to my new hannspree led tv.
i cant use the scart connection,( scart adapter using for astra box)
so i connected it using a composite lead. red, white and yellow.
i get the sound but pictures in black and white?
tried all settings on tv and dvd, no joy.
maybe using wrong connection? some one mention component connections?
    whats the difference?
    thks

The dvd players fine, connect using scart on another tv, all dvds play fine.

Yes, it's just that I recall trying to play some US dvds through a composite connection & could only get b/w picture, presumably due to the NTSC composite signal. Worked ok with RGB scart to tv.

no these DVDS are ok, its a pain new tvs coming with no scart connections.
hdmi, composite/componant and a supplied adapter for one scart option.

Try checking the settings on the DVD player - any chance the output is set to component rather than cvbs?

How many phono jacks are there on the back of your DVD player?

Component outputs three video signals over the Yellow/Red/Green (Y,Pr,Pb) video phono jacks, then the audio is output via Red/White audio phono jacks

CVBS outputs a combined (composite) video signal over the Yellow phone jack, with audio out via the Red/White jacks.

Best bet is to check the settings if possible on the player and post the options here if you're unsure.

Are you sure you are selecting the right input source on the tv?

Is there a S-Video (sometimes called S-VHS) socket on the TV also? You may have to go into menu on the TV and change from S-Video to composite (CVBS)?

Many DVD players have 3 output modes PAL, NTSC and MULTI, select PAL and American DVDs (if not region blocked and will play) get converted to a PAL/625 rather than a NTSC/525 output.
'MULTI' mode will output in the corresponding native format of the DVD, either NTSC/525 or PAL/625, BTW two DVD players I have output the DVD player's menus etc as NTSC when in the MULTI mode and only switch to PAL when a 'PAL' DVD is played.

OP, try checking/changing to PAL output on the DVD player if set differently?

i have tried all settings on TV and DVD, if i connect DVD using scart on another TV the picture is fine ,so settings on DVD must be ok.

On my TV selecting an AV input twice toggles between RGB and composite.

you say you have an astra box. If you mean a SKY box on Astra, then connect the DVD to the spare SCART socket (VCR). Many other satellite receivers also have dual scart sockets. You may have to change SCART control settings or put the receiver into standby for it to passthrough. ( Also check scart cables if you haven't already done so , like SCSI cables of old dodgy cables are all too common)

    Go back to square one.

Test out the DVD on the scart socket. Try all the settings on both the TV and DVD to see what works and what doesn't.
