Problem with the guarda...

    Hi all,

    I need some advice/help.
I am a registered archer at Dublin Archers... started last year.

So I was bringing back my beautiful recurve bow from France(100% sports model, 30Lb branches, nothing weird, standard tip arrows)... Checked in the luggage... The conveyor belt guy thought it was suspicious, forced me to go to the customs... customs bailed out saying they had no idea about the law about it... called the guarda... airport guarda came in and said it was a firearm, confiscated it. I tried to explain to them it wasn't but the guy wouldn't hear a word.
He kept on just saying "it can kill someone, it's a firearm, you need a firearm licence for it".

His words were around the likes of "this is like a crossbow, hence it's illegal". I explained him the difference but he wouldn't hear me.

Any advice as to what can be done? Anything I can refer them to?

    Thanks

The airport police or the actual Gardai?

Call their superiors and tell them according to the 1990 Firearms and Offensive Weapons Act and the 2008 Restricted Firearms and Ammunition SI only crossbows are considered firearms under Irish law and you want your bow released.

If ya can, go in and speak to whoever is in charge and explain the situation and mention those references I gave ya there. If ya get no joy, take out your phone there and then and call the Firearms Policy Unit in the Phoenix Park, the number is (01)6661911 explain what happened to them and ask them to explain to their officer the laws on bows and how only crossbows are firearms here.

Thank you all for your support and advice!

The legal document were enough to make them change of opinion, and they gave me back my equipment. Got a bit of a scare there but all is fine!
