i wonder has anyone done this or know where i might be able to do it. we have a 10d toyota verso diesel. only 20k miles. it is now our second car and not driven much..... we would like to trade it in and get a smaller petrol car not a new one. is it possible to do this and get cash back or should we try to sell privately

How much cash are you trying to free up? What's the 'first car'

To get the best deal you are always better to sell privately then buy what you want. Some dealer would get cash back, but you will pay highly for the privilege.

Dealer will give cash back only at a price that suits them. They have to run a business at the end of the day. This means they can only do a deal with cash your way where they are effectively buying your car from you at the trade price.

You will almost certainly achieve a better price selling privately, how much better is down to a lot of factors; how well you prepare and advertise the car, how accommodating you are to potential buyers, how good a salesperson you are. You could end up going through a world of hassle and having large chunks of your spare time taken up for weeks on end to save a few hundred quid at the end of it all. On the other hand you could get a stress free sale in a matter of days and save yourself a four figure sum.

What I would advise is first of all find a car that you want to buy, work out a price with the dealer for both a straight cash sale of the car you want and also how the deal would work if you were to include your car. Then you can calculate how much the dealer is actually giving you for your car. If it seems too low then advertise it privately for say €1500 more than the dealer are offering (assuming this price would then be in line with what similar examples are selling privately for). Give it a week or two and if it sells then great you are ahead of the game, if your head is wrecked with timewasters take the ad down and go back to the dealer with your tail between your legs :P

its not really about freeing up cash........ just the car is not being used i suppose a small petrol family car for about 10k with 7/8 back....
