Bicycle Warranty

Folks, I know this subject has come up before, but I thought I'd raise it again 'cause of what happened to me this weekend.

Was out on my bike (11 months old), approaching the top of a long climb. Heard a noise from the back (thought it was my spoke magnet rubbing), then a clunk and then the pedals stared spinning (and I just about unclipped before I did a face plant).

Saw the rear derailleur mangled in the cassette, and a spoke broken at the hub end. Had to ring for a lift home.

The bike has never been crashed, dropped or abused (my wife will attest to this, she reckons I treat it better that I do her). Do you reckon I will have much of a fight getting the LBS to repair it under warranty (cost over 2 grand).

Doubt it. That will happen if the hanger is bent, or if the derailleur cage is bent, or possibly even if the limit screws are set badly. Good luck proving to the LBS that all was fine before this happened, and that you hadn't been fiddling with the gears, or banged the derailleur off something in the garage or whatever...

Worth a try but I wouldn't be too hopeful! I wonder did the spoke break, catch the derailleur and then mangle everything up? It just seems a bit unlikely that a bent hanger would suddenly cause the derailleur to bury itself into the wheel and cassette. When did you last have the bike serviced?

It's quite possible thst the 'root cause' was the spoke failure. But when I contact the LBS I will be arguing that the warranty is for the whole bike, including the spokes (most bike manufacturers exclude certain 'wear are tear' items on their warranty, I doubt the warranty excludes the spokes and/or the rear derailleur).

The bike is serviced regularly, it has a new chain and casette fitted since new.
