Can't renewal motor tax online this year??

Just got motor tax renewal form through the letter box and decided to get it knocked out - and out of the way.
    As in the 2 previous years with that car, I was going to renew online. However, on this occasion there is no PIN on the renewal letter. Went on to motortax.ie and tried to retrieve a PIN - but get this error message;

"This vehicle is not eligible for online taxing. Please contact your local motor tax office."

Does anyone know what the hell they are playing at here?

<EDIT> Tried to call them - but they only have a 2 hour window to accept incoming calls each afternoon. Have emailed them instead...</EDIT>

must be an error....maybe they were slow to let people renew on line with the new rates coming in?

The pin is the last six digits of the chassis number.

This only applies to the first PIN issued AFAIK.

 - not you OP. 2 hour window for calls?? That's a joke!

I renewed mine late in December without incident, but the timing seems suspect.
Complete speculation on my part, but knowing how the State's IT systems can't talk to each other, are antiquated etc, it wouldn't surprise me if they dumped the existing DB to make it compatible with the new 131/132 farce, so everyone has to start over now down the tax office again.

There ya go OP.. I stand corrected and it's just you - but probably a temporary condition :)

Maybe try clearing temporary internet files/cookies etc and try again or use Chrome if you're not already.. I find it causes much less hassle online

Its a Fiesta van. I dont use it commercially - so have been taxing it privately for the past 2.5 years without issue. I was always of the understanding that it was impossible to get it tested - either DOE or NCT.

In the past, DOE wont deal with it with private tax. NCT obviously wont deal with it as its commercial.

Anyways, the email I got in response to this issue from motor tax office is that I cant tax it until it has a DOE cert.

    Has anyone come across this?

I got my Astra van doe'd in Kilkenny a month ago it is taxed privately and is down as private on the log book they still had no problem doeing and handed me the cert. I know for a fact it can't be Nct'd you could Nct small car vans at one stage but not anymore. In saying all that I didn't need a doe cert to tax my van. The only reason I doe'd my van was I heard all the horror stories about gaurds talking van with no doe I don't know if its true but I wasn't talking any chances.

ALL vans need a DOE, Came in about 2 years ago.

Won't tax without the cert. (Well not supossed to anyway)

    Thanks all for posting.

Bloody nuisance. The reason I opted for private tax was so that it would save me the bother/inconvenience of testing (and the expense). Is the DOE more straightforward than the NCT? Worse again is the fact that this has to be every year! I guess I can see some logic to this - but whilst I'm putting high mileage on it, its being looked after and its not being used commercially.

I suppose if I now try to revert to commercial motor tax, they won't allow it?

I had a 97 carvan that was never tested, Passed DOE first time. :)

If you tax commercialy, You can only use it for business (Can't drop kids off at school or go to the shop for bread on a Sunday etc..)

I got my tax renewal by email yesterday, with the pin number.
The mail said there would be no paper renewal.
Never heard of this before, but saves paper I suppose!

    Just wondering about renewing online.

Is there a page where you enter the CRW details?

Also is there a page for the RF111a declaration (goods only)?

You can get a DOE cert & still tax it privately. Also the DOE test is a lot less onerous than the NCT test. DOE testing is also done by the VTN network. I'm sure there's a few heavy goods garages within reach of you that will have esting facilities.

It wasn't always the case - at least a couple of years back in any event. I guess I'm lucky nobody stopped me looking for one in the meantime!
