Well I bought s bushnell neo on eBay today should have it in a few weeks. I've been humming over getting a GPS for a while now but said feck it and just bought it there today.
Anyone have any experience of these?

It came for €65 delivered but you need to buy membership of igolf that costs $34. It holds 10 courses so if you don't wish to pay the $34 every year and stick with the 10 saved courses you can do that. I'd imagine that's what I'll do tbh I've played a good few different courses this year but that was more about being new to golf and seeing a few courses I'd heard a lot about.
I thought it wasn't bad value for less than €100.

Yep I have had this unit for the past few years - it hasn't missed a beat. I have a few courses if you need them to test out - let me know.

Also this is one of the few units where you can map all of your own custom points (and whole courses) if you wish so this is a really nice touch for such a cheap unit.

That's an amazing price by the way - did you buy from an individual or a store on eBay?

No I bought from an individual and its the first time I've done that on eBay so I am a little nervous but as per discription it's new so we're headed for dispute resolution if its not in top nick.
Good to hear a positive response too, cheers for the offer.
How have you found the igolf it seems to cover the Irish courses very well (any I've searched anyway)

Just bought one myself, paid €70 (should have looked harder for the €65:D), it holds 10 courses but you can download up to 100 with the year, so my plan is to download about 100 courses throughout Ireland (trying to pick courses i'll actually play) keep them on the computer. The course information will always be on your computer and it wont mater if your igolf membership has expired.
I think there is a way to get one course for free, I'll see if I can find it and post back if I do.

p.s. if anyone has igolf file for Portsalon in Donegal give me a PM;).

I have a few courses ( the ones that I play ) and when I originally got the unit they didn't actually have many Irish courses mapped. That seems to have changed now and the vast majority all seem to be there now.

I don't have anything outside Dublin I'm afraid but can provide the files that I have, also I have never joined up to get the 100 course files but was also thinking of doing so. I'm on an island off the coast of Auckland at present (Waiheke) and due to play golf on Friday - surprisingly they have that course mapped now also !!

My neo arrived in the post, had problems setting it up, mainly because i was running a new version of Java. So I set it up on an old laptop running XP and it worked straight away. Java 6/7 are too new, it actually says Java 1.6 in the manual, but that might not even run on a W7 pc.

I paid the $30 for the 100 courses, so m r c or if anyone else wants a few course files just drop me a PM. The files themselves are tiny so i can email them on.

Nice one, but what about me pint ;-)

I had read some posts similar to what you've said there on golfwrx, nice to see its not that big of a deal to sort I've an old dell pc and it sounds like it'll be coming out of the attic.
What's your first thoughts presuming you haven't had it out already?

Ha, that's a pint you owe me now!!:D

Yeah haven't had it out, but will be heading out on Friday so I'll post back.
It looks good, easy to navigate, small enough to fit in pocket but I'll probably attach it to the trolley, main screen during play will just be a big Centre reading and smaller front and back. I only ever look at the centre 99% of the time, if I can hit it to there I wont be complaining. very easy to get courses of igolf and loads onto the neo in seconds. The two big things for me will be the GPS accuracy, in all the reviews it has got a high mark, which is important. Secondly it looks very easy to alter a reading while you're on the course, so if I think a distance is out I can just remap the green (hopefully that wont be needed). You can also add custom points, but on my course there are only a couple that I would actually need/want.

Fridays round is just casual so will be nice to try it out before Sundays comp and I'll check it against a course marker on each hole.

You can try the old PC, but you could also try loading an old JAVA onto your PC, LINKY this is older versions of JAVA. Dont take long to load and you could update to current straight afterwards.

Yes - forgot that the only issue I had was with Java versions. This can be tricky. I have a link to the exact instructions that I researched. It's allows the unit to sync with Windows 7 PCs no issue.

I'm travelling now so can't post, but will put up the link when I return.

Meant to say the chap selling it messaged me earlier saying that he refunded $16.12 in postage(He explained that his shipping quote was an estimation) so it stands me $68 odd delivered. I thought that was massive sound of him to refund after I was happy with the $84 in the first place. For that money you couldn't pass on them if they are any addition at all.

By the way, if you live within 10km of any courses you have mapped then you can test your device from your own couch and it will show you how far you are from all of the greens. I am within striking distance of about 4 courses so can see them all from the armchair ;-)

That was very descent of him, could hardly go wrong at about €50.

I think the maximum measurement is 999yards on the Bushnell, so you would have to be very close. On FreeCaddie (on a smart phone) it will give you the distance, i'm 54680 yards from the first pin at my course, that's a drive and a 7 iron for me:D

How did you get on with it?

Just have mine in hand there this evening looks perfect cant fault it. Search for sats took 10 seconds and found 'strong' signal so looks good to go.

Chaps - just in case you or anyone else needs it, this is the link and the version of Java required in order to get the Neo Sync Software to work with Windows XP or Windows 7 .

Follow all the instructions on the Bushnell site for the install but with the Java link ignore version 7 and go to the Java site here :(http://java.com/en/d...d/manual_v6.jsp) for version 6.33 32bit.

I also have the following .glf course files. PM me and I will email them to you if anyone needs them.

    Clontarf_Golf_Club
    Druids_Glen_Golf_Club
    Roganstown_Golf
    Royal_Dublin_Golf_Club
    Smurfit-K_Club_Ireland_The
    St_Anne's_Golf_Club

I have the disc, excuse my ignorance but does that make the install easier?
I haven't tried any of that yet anyway, my laptop has the flu ATM :-)

The mapping is very easy on these though, I'd say I was very little more than an hour doing my home club. That was what I wanted to do regardless of when I get it set up with away courses. There are a few greens where I wanted for example the top tier distance as ctr rather than exact ctr so i know the carry needed for the top. Or where I wanted to be a yard or two in instead of exact front where bunkers are short. My mapping would prob drive other lads mad. That's a nice feature to have on such a budget device IMHO.

Haven't bloody got out to use it yet, meant to be playing tomorrow but have to work now instead:mad:
maybe Monday, but known my luck the course will be frozen.

I wouldn't use the disk, if I was you I'd download JAVA version 1.6 (just google it), then go to the bushnell site and download the installer for connecting your computer to the bushnell, then to to igolf and its pretty simple from there.

Finally got out today to try out the Bushnell Neo. I had the course downloaded from iGolf and when I got to the first tee I knew there was something wrong, it said 225y to the centre and the hole is 350y. Got to the first green and just entered in my own measurements for the front, centre and back.
Got to the next hole and the exact same, only one hole out of the 16 I mapped was actually correct on the unit. Some were 100's of yards out.
Very disappointed, I don't mind mapping my home course but now if I go to a new course I'll have no confidence that the right coordinates are entered already. I'll be contacting iGolf tonight.

That is a dose, I had a totally different experience yesterday. I mapped my home course myself on Thursday. I got to the club at five in the evening, so I took a little torch out with me. It took an hour on the button and that was taking time to pick points that suited me. Eg on a two tier green instead of the exact ctr I saved the first part of the top tier where the ball wouldn't roll back from etc. I used it over 9 in the winter league and found it a dream.
Tbh some people would def prefer the thing to be perfect out of the box where I'd be more into putting my own touch to it so once it was accurate I was always going to be happy.
I hope the customer service in igolf look after you on that. Your mapping sounds like it was off the chart wrong.
What kind of signal strength had you there?
That said I doubt that could have been an issue.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,800 ✭✭✭Senna

Strength was perfect, full bars, of the holes I mapped myself, I checked a few as we doubled back and they matched the course markers perfect. Definitely no problem with the Neo.
For my home course I really don't mind mapping it myself, but I took out the iGolf membership so if I do get to play other courses I would have the GPS for them too.
Spoke to an iGolf representative and it looks like they will refund me the membership fee and I also contacted Bushnell as I really wanted to buy a Bushnell watch this year, but if they use iGolf for all their mapping, I don't think it would be worth the risk. A real pity, one or two holes out would be acceptable, but I really think iGolf just mapped Portsalon in 5 seconds using a very poor satellite maps just so they could add it to their data base. No one mapping a course could do the job so badly by mistake, I've mapped courses using Google maps before (for Freecaddie) and its a 10 minute job even for courses you are not familiar with.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 848 ✭✭✭Kace

Now that you say it - I found the same with the K-Club when I used the iGolf version. I thought it was because the course had been changed since it was originally mapped.

Did the iGolf say how the courses are actually mapped ? I would be interested to know this. By the sounds of things they outsourced this to some bucks in China or India and this is the quality that has resulted.

It would be worth trying out a few more and seeing what the quality is like. I would agree that if you buy a Bushnell watch the same issues will be there, as Bushnell bought out iGolf a few years ago.

Let us know how you get on with other courses from iGolf.
