Haven't had time to participate here much in recent months. "Life is what happens when you are busy making other plans" I guess. I hope to fix that this year. Happy 2013 to all on the photography forum.

I recently realised that I had shockingly few images from my own city of Dublin so I decided to to try to rectify this over the last few months. I also tried to include more black and white in my work. Here are the results.

    Customs House

    Grafton Street at Night

    Docklands at Dawn

    Temple Bar, Early Morning.

    lovely pictures!

    -but-
    from the charter:
Try to keep to a maximum of 4 images to a thread, and link the others. Exceptions can be made, in cases of stories being told with the photographs, etc.
    (thanks)
    :)

Whoops, sorry. Got a bit too enthusiastic. Will reduce to 4 now.

    Hi secman,

These were taken using a Canon 40D. The Custom House shot is actually a blend of 3 images taken at different exposures and then blended (not hdr..... I haven't fallen off the wagon ;) ).

They are all shot at f14. The darkest exposure was 2 seconds, the middle exposure was 8 seconds and the brightest was 30 seconds.

By blending these 3, I was able to overcome the difficulties of the wide differences in brightness in different parts of the image with the darkest image preserving all the details on the Customs House while the brightest shot retained the deep blue colour of the sky rather than turning it black.
Some great shots there, I went over to your website and I really like your docklands by night.

Thanks flyingsnail. I like that one myself. I've sold it a few times too which is always a bonus.

really like the first one, such strong colours.
    Much PP on it?

Hope to make it up more in 2013 in our new venue Joe. Although I hear the new chairman is a bit dodgy!

Not too much once the exposure blending was done, just the usual contrast, sharpening etc. I did give the colours a boost as I like nice strong colours especially in night shots.

Lovely stuff. The customshouse shot is really stunning. The templebar shot is great too, never seen it so empty!

The one of the docklands has lovely colours and tones but it seems a little busy to my eye, it's kinda hard to pick something to focus on - but I guess it's hard to get a simpler composition there.

The shot of grafton street I like too, but I wonder if the Christmas lights running across the street detract from it a little? They seem to block the view of the street curving away into the distance which was the line my eye wanted to follow. Of course this is just what I'm getting from it!

    Lovely work though! :)

Also I must give that exposure blending a whirl! Never tried it before.

Temple Bar early morning for me...Grafton street not bad either, not really into the other two standard type shots.

Custom House is very good; haven't seen it from exactly that angle with that other building in the background. I think I've seen Grafton Street too often (although maybe some of them were actually your shots in the random thread), and I find the 3rd one a bit cluttered.

I absolutely love that Temple Bar shot, particularly the B&W processing, and the lone figure. The shop signs really work as well. It has inspired me to open my eyes a bit more and see the opportunities that there are to make something out of a familiar street.

thanks. I must try that shot again without the lights and compare the two.

Do. It's a great way of overcoming exposure issues and it looks way more natural than hdr.

Cheers. The Temple Bar one is a bit different to what I usually do so I am pleased it turned out well.
