    Hi Guys,
I had my diesel avensis serviced about 2 months ago (private mechanic) and just noticed that yellow engine symbol is now displayed on indicator panel. It is driving fine and I have never had engine problems before. The manual is suggesting i bring it to an authorised toyota dealer but i am reluctant to do this due to higher costs being a student. Is this serious and can my local mechanic sort it out without diagnostic equipment?

Is it down on power or driving any differently?

Tbh, it could be a lot of things and the only way to know is by a diagnostic, but if there are symptoms it may point you in the right direction

You don't need to bring it to a Toyota dealer, you can bring it to any garage that has diagnostic equipment that can scan it. Where are you located?

Mine came on (sorry it's a petrol). Didn't bring it to a main dealer but back to the guy I bought it from (he had a computer, so did my own mechanic - who didn't want to touch it as I had only bought it). Thought it was a sensor initially so turned off the light, which came on again. Sensor was changed and it came on again. Turned out to be a fair sized hole through the honeycomb in the cat.

If it were my car, I would get it seen to. I know money is tight for a lot of people, me included, but it's better you know what you're facing ASAP, then you have somewhere to work from.
