Suggestion for Technical forum.

I've noticed that we always get people who are relatively new and people who just might not be technically capable unless shown with certain problems i.e how to change a hop up rubber, clean a pistol, clean a barrel, shimming, fitting a mosfet, general servicing, DIY tips etc.

So I propose an idea to the mods why not create a video tutorial thread within the technical forum providing links from youtube with unanimous decisions that selected video gives good detailed advice on what to do, because let's face it some tutorials are quite shocking and are extremely vague, or if we got a boards member (and there is plenty) who are experienced with technical side of our sport to make a video and again seek approval from the mods provided it is a detailed and accurate tutorial, post it up and sticky.

Some people may or may not like his idea but I think it could be very beneficial to people who may be skeptical when it comes to mods and servicing.

So anyone like the idea or is it over complicated and time consuming to do?.

It's an excellent idea and I've got Airsoft DIY video links to share

Also, maybe it would be better to start a thread with the title "Airsoft DIY Videos" or similar, then request it be made a sticky if there is enough interest, as this is a user driven forum ;)

Like I said its all well and good posting videos or links but some are vague and can be of little help which is why I thought the video being reviewed by a mod before it has even been posted and stickied to make sure it is beneficial and accurate.

it's a good idea but why couldn't we just post up links to videos on threads started by users with questions.
Plenty of people ask how to change a hop up for example. Therefore we could easily send them a link to a youtube video, instead the majority of us decide to post it in words. My point is that if we don't put up links for videos when people actually ask the questions why would this help?

Unless of course someone out there where to start doing good quality technical videos (perhaps a user form boards.ie so we know them) or even a Q&A. other than that it's a good idea but i can't see it being used much/

That was my initial point, rather than put up a post and then direct them to youtube, the can just watch an ebedded one here, now I am not saying make the technical forum completely redundant and make videos of everything but certain tutorials I think should be here, basic maintenance, cleaning barrels etc.

My idea of using a boards member creates more of a community within the forum itself rather than some video of some 12 year old american kid with hammer and screw driver saying "ummmmmmmmm" every two seconds.

I think this is an excellent idea, a user contributed universal Thread that has D.I.Y videos for different types of Airsoft devices.

If it gets set up I will create pistol tutorial videos as with the amount of (terrible) experience I have had with WE 1911's I hope I could give something back to the Boards community here.

Would significantly reduce clutter and the same questions being asked. Hell create 2 threads: One a basic breakdown/tutorial thread in the airsoft questions section that could show each piece of an RIF and describe it..and the detailed DIY vids in the technical section i.e. how to change _________

At the same time I wouldn't want to clutter it up with tonnes of videos on a vast range of subjects because that will get hectic and not very manageable unless you then put them into subcategories within my proposed idea.

Ideally like I said basic maintenance videos, which to me is essential with aegs, pistols, gbbr's etc and why people should do it more often.

Changing simple parts like hop-up rubbers, motors, soldering on some deans connectors.

We would still use the technical forum for posts that cant quite simply be solved by a video and do what we always do and "trouble shoot" amongst members to solve the problem or if someone has a technical project they have.

    I agree with ya there

Essentially something along the lines of Thread title: Airsoft DIY/Tutorials:
GBB Pistols: Tutorial Video 1: MAINTENANCE

Tutorial Video 2: Pistol take-down and part description
Tutorial Video 3: Changing (hop, barrel, springs, etc.
Tutorial Video 4: Trouble shooting/ common problems (could be brand exclusive or model exclusive)
    Other useful links
It would essentially be the same for each one, and if need be more tags or spoilers can be used to further separate the info?

    AEG's: more videos
    GBBR's: more vdieos
    Springers: eomr divoes

I personally think this is great Lil Armour on the idea of a basic thread and an advanced thread. It would really reduce the number of unnecessary threads and if they do appear a mod or anybody really could redirect them......saying that the thread would take time for it to truly get going but overall I think it's a good idea

Love the idea of a helpful advice thread, bring it on I say.

We do need something simplistic though, creating individual threads for individual brands is a good idea but when it comes to a M4 (Version 2) gearboxes its pretty much the same as most brands. And that in turn is the same for any model of gun with a different gearbox design.

    Sooooooo maybe a:

Version 1 maintenance (Old skoooool if you have one) tutorial.
    Version 2 maintenance tutorial.
    Version 3 maintenance tutorial.
    Etc.......

Most pistols come with a manual that provides take down instructions so maybe eliminate that, basic pistol maintenance is pretty much the same for all brands, models. They all work on the same principle with exception of revolvers.

    Keep the ideas coming.

Well I am not the most AEG literate but if it's pistols I can provide. As you said the basics of pistols are similar and probably unnecessary but I can do the intermediate stuff, how to repair/trouble shoot/replace certain parts...

Maybe for the purpose of what we're aiming for the Thread on topic could be broken into Basic, Intermediate, and Advanced, with made videos from folks such as ourselves with the inclusion of other videos like Oddy's or other Youtube airsofters. Just spitballing ideas here.

Another would be to organise the whole thread by Gun type/Version > Brand/clones > Basic/Intermediate/Advanced.

Effectively formatted like a table of contents until you get to the videos e.g. Gun type:
    M4
    AK
    ACR
    Sig 552
    P90
    M97
    Mp5
    etc.
Clicking one of those would bring you it's brand so let's say AK
    Cyma
    Classic Army
    G&G
    etc.
Clicking one of those would then bring up the videos bordered off by the skill or complexities of it. e.g.
Basic: simple take down and maintenance (where does the battery go?)
Intermediate: taking the gun down fully and upgrading some internals
Advanced full gun/ gearbox cleaning, gearbox upgrades and more complex internals etc...

Now the whole idea doesn't need to be that complex or simple but just an idea for format and structure.

How's this for simple, google or the search function on any site, now it's a working progress so please bear with me (super serious face)

Hows the going glenn, I get your idea but bringing in brands, models etc just is not really needed. Most basic maintenance and all that is the same for most brands but not all.

Only a handful of tutorials would be needed really...I think .

I'd like a mods input to be honest, if this idea is even remotely feasible or not.

Well this died quite quickly :), any mods going to give a bit of feedback on this?.

If any member of this forum wishes to start a thread containing Links to videos of Maintenance/Upgrade etc then I would be more than happy to sticky it and give any help I can

But as you said it died quickly as a lot of people think it is a good idea but only if somebody else does it

Fancy doing a few vids yourself kev :)?. Your fairly well up on the whole technical side of things.

I'll have a nosey on youtube and see if there is any good quality basic tutorials. I'll start off with maintenance maybe, if it catches on then maybe do an upgrade section.

I am not the video type of person but I will also have a look around for a few videos when I get a few spare minutes to myself

Likewise doubt my bogger kerry accent would translate well on camera.

Oddy's channel has a fairly good few detailed tutorials with regards upgrades and dis assembly. And two videos for attaching Deans to an aeg and li-po battery.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,901 ✭✭✭T4RGET

the first thing, upgrade wise is probably to go for a tutorial on the hop up, eveyone is always asking for that :)

My skills extend to cleaning the barrel so I think the OP's idea is brilliant. There are loads of airsofters who can shoot, change a mag and that's about it. A bit of technical education would be very welcome.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,006 ✭✭✭Southern Dandy

I'll give a video a lash the weekend and see how it fairs, must clean the barrel anyways may as well do a barrel cleaning video could always throw in a hop up changing one while I am at it.

If anyone has links by all means horse away with them, throw them up here on this thread and see if people find it useful or not maybe. We can decide then which ones to use and to not use.
