Hi, Im planning a trip for this year around America and was wondering what are the best websites for the cheapest flights and hotel rooms, there are so many out there (ebookers, hotels.com, trivago etc) that Im a bit overwhelmed and would appreciate a few tips on what are the best websites to use. My trip is 9 months away and Im not looking for 'hostel' type cheap places, just a reduction in the normal expensive method of booking directly with aer lingus, hotel etc.

    Thanks.

Hello OP, you might be better off posting this in the travel forum.

Although I would say booking directly with the airlines and hotels isn't necessarily more expensive.

AH tip for the day: Don't book into a hostel room that sleeps 16 people.

    This ^

Saved me about 300 euro for two flights to Canada the other day compared to ebookers.

HolidayPirates are superb for finding cheap flights..

Matrix Search is quite good for flights. As above, HolidayPirates is good for deals. Hotwire.com and AirBnB are both good for accomodation.

Yeah skyscanner probably best for flights.

Trivago isn't bad for accommodation, but check hostelworld.com or hostelbookers.com too.

I've never used Airbnb, but I know people who have and say it's brilliant.

I've travelled alone on a tight budget and first thing I would advise you is definitely have as much accommodation booked in advance as you can- if you leave it til you get to the places you want to stay you may end up spending more due to lack of choice & even pure exhaustion!

Also, use tripadvisor to check reviews- I know it's not gospel or anything, but at least you've some idea of what you're getting.

Finally, use google maps to locate exactly where you're staying- this can help when trying to cut back on transport costs, and also you can see what other facilities are around- and if the area is safe etc.

    Just my experience anyway!

I did a few trips in the USA all over. In general, the motels are the best cheap and cheerful accomodation options. We never had any hassle with them and they are everywhere. Availability is also rarely an issue. Try the Motel 6, and Econolodge websites. They are usually the cheapest but Super 8, la Quinta Inn, and Days Inn are a better standard & more expensive.

For flights, skscanner.ie seems good. Ive also used ebookers.ie a few times without issue. Sometimes it can be cheap to try the airline websites directly, i.e Delta, American airways etc.

DO NOT forget to fill out the ESTA form before you fly otherwise you wont be let into the country. Also up in Dublin airport you will need an address of a place you are staying in the US and A before you fly.
