Hey:) I do Law and Society and I'm in 2nd year! The course is a great one but like any law degree, challenging. Roughly, you're talking 10-14 hours per week depending on tutorials etc. In first year all modules are compulsory so you'll study things like Criminal law, Constitutional, Law of Torts etc. Then in the following two years you will also study some compulsory modules but the module choice is flexible so as to allow you to shape your own degree. For example if you wanted to become a solicitor/barrister you'd choose subjects such as Law of Property and Company law. If you were more interested in the area of Human Rights, for example, you could choose modules that surrounds that area! The degree is an accredited law degree which means it covers all subjects suitable for entrance exams to Blackhall (solicitor) or Kings Inns (Barrister).
As there are very little hours, there is quite a bit of reading to do outside of college! Granted, most people (including me) don't and when it comes to exams the stress can get to you!! It's a great degree though and the classes are generally small so by the end of the year you're sure to know pretty much everyone! DCU also has a great vibe and is easy to make friends with plenty of clubs and societies! One thing I will say though is make sure to look into law before you go applying, I wouldn't advice it unless you're entirely sure it's for you! I know a few people who studied law because "they didn't know what else to do" but you really have to have an interest in it, similar to any degree I suppose!! Best of luck, hope that helps a bit:D

I'm short for time but I've answered to a large number of threads asking about the course, I'm in final year of it. Do a quick search and you'll find a few.

The most important thing for this course is being prepared to do a large amount of work. You might have no interest in the particular subject(s), or might not want to have a career in anything remotely related to law, but you're still going to have to be able to focus and bust your ass (literally - people in my class have complained of hurting back there from sitting down studying for so long) working a lot of the time. For most people, it's a fairly challenging course a lot of the time.

If however, you're hoping to cruise through college and spend minimal time in the library I'd advise you to pick something else. Don't get me wrong, I did plenty of partying and drinking in 1st year and a little less so last year and got on fine, but you have to be able to cope with a large workload as there's heaps of material to go through.

    Hi Anon1347,

I did the BCL (Law & Society) degree in DCU 2009 - 2012, I'd be happy to give you some info. Feel free to pm me. In short, it's an excellent course and thoroughly prepares you for a number of different avenues. In hindsight, I'd chose to do it again over other universities.

Best of luck with the change in courses! :)
