Hey guys what would be the most fuel efficient car for doing that amount of driving every week and how much diesel/petrol would you think you would spend in the week. Budget 5,000 euro. Obviously want something comfortable to drive as well.

(VW Passat), (Skoda Octavia, Superb), (Seat Leon), (BMW 3 or 5 series),(Ford Mondeo, Focus)
All diesel's of course Your price range they will be the old style 1.9 tdi ones good strong reliable cars.

Depending on your driving style motorway driving anywhere 45mpg upwards usually 50 - 60mpg

Mondeo class minimum. Comfort makes all the difference. Plus something that can overtake relatively easily. 1.9tdi 130 Superb would be worth a look.

Should get mid-high 40s without trying very hard.

If you're paying for the fuel yourself then I'd be inclined to shop based on combined fuel consumption figures, bearing in mind that every 1L/100km in extra consumption will add over 1k to your annual fuel bill.

A car getting that kind of mileage wont have much value after a year or two, here two comfortable ones and these seem to always get less abuse than the country performance car of choice the 130bhp passat, and are far superior value than a similar age a4.

Other than one of these, id look for a rare l&k octavia (leather, cruise, climatronic sunroof etc 00-01 only) spend 3k ish, a bit in the bank to service it 4 times a year (minimum)

Id be looking for something very comfortable and with cruise control. possibly an e class or 5 series... actually the 2L diesel didnt come into until 2005, so if bm, will have to be a 3 series.

Mk5 golf 1.9tdi. I easily get 4.2l for 100 km. comfortable to drive and could pick up a 2005 for that sort of money.

Toyota Prius converted to LPG, you will not get a lower cost per Kilometer unless you cycle and I doubt even Lance Armstrong full of steroids could manage 1,300kms in a week.

Volvo S40? ... I don't know why but my back is always crippled in a VAG :(

    Doing 1000km/week.

Mondeo 2.0 TDCI is also a mileage muncher.

At that mileage its diesel all the way so i'd be looking at a VW Golf/Passat or Skoda Octavia. Mondeo might be worth a look too.

Cheers for the replies. How much do you reckon you would spend on Diesel travelling that distance in a week. I like the look of the Mondeos

A C5 2.0HDI. Comfortable and cheap. You'll save a few euros on the purchase price to put forward for tax etc. 65mpg easily.

Was just about to suggest a C5. For some reason I always think on them when comfort for big milage is a requirement.

Ah, now. And what if you tried, what would the mpg be then???

50mpg if you try from my experience.

Used to tip along with an Xantia 110 Hdi round 60mpg. Once got 67 on an economy run. Tip along round 90Km/h and they're well economical engines.

I put up approx 800kms a week in my TD 406.

Doubt the OP would consider such a car, alas I'm just throwing it out there

How much that cost you on diesel?

Usually in or around about 60 euros. Mixed driving, indirect injection

HDi would be cheaper to run (I like my TD though)

    Very comfortable to drive

A Golf TDI should do roughly 1000km per tank so say 1.5 fills a week at the OPs mileage would be in the region of €120 weekly on Diesel.

This. The wife has an 08 one and they are a serious comfy car and will do 50ish to the gallon in diesel.

Downside will be tax of circa €900-€1000 per annum pre 08, which is all 5k will get in one of these.

Do you know of anyone with one of these in Ireland?
Just interested to see how viable it is here and what the costs would be.
LPG availability around the country at good prices still seems to be an issue.

Whatever the costs, theres a few around where I live.

The performance is absolutely dire since you've the extra weight of the tank+lpg+batteries+petrol reserve.

Guy I spoke to said he floors it going out of the Petrol Station to the slip road and can barely join at 80km/h
