This is my first post on boards, and I am a new user here, but long time reader. Apologies if this has been done before, I searched the forums but found no theads with my specific query exactly and which raise the precise topic exactly. DISCUSS. Here's my idea.

Primary school: Eliminate Religion and teach Irish properly from a truly native speaker or someone with a 3rd level degree specifically in Irish and introduce Friday as an Irish only speaking day. Féck the foreigners, they can have an exemption to it if they receive one from the principal.

Bring in Mandarin Chinese and some other European language of the children's / parents' choice.

TEACH SCIENCE for the love of GOD.

Secondary School: Teach maths property, abolish project maths and have them leaving school with a university standards of maths.

Abolish English after the Junior Certificate.

Abolish Irish Poetry and Prose and only teach the Language, no literature cráp. It should only be taught until Junior Cert, if it is taught properly until then, then you should be at least semi-fluent in it upon reaching age 14 / 15.

    Abolish P.E.

Leaving cycle should only be what you want, IE, dual core system, for example, language and science. For example the student can choose French, German, Maths, Physics, Chemistry and Biology, etc.

    Discuss.

You may want to ask one of the very friendly AH mods to move this to an appropriate forum. After Hours is a bit slap dash and not at all equipped to digest and contribute to the topic in the style you may wish.

Although I heard they are all drunk on free beer, so you may have to wait

And what of us locals who have no desire for it? As it is now, Parents can request exclusion from religious studies for their children if they wish.

I doubt this is actually his first time posting or being on boards. He knew what stupid stuff to put into the OP to try and rile up people here.

Would agree with your points on Irish, maybe leaving out the Irish-only fridays. I'd split Irish at secondary level into 2 classes, one being conversational irish like how spanish and french are taught but to a higher standard, the other being the poetry/literature/history part of the course. A student has to to pick one of these, but could pick both if they wanted.

A European language should be taught at Primary School level. The teachers in my primary school stayed back every day to teach french and even though I went on to do Spanish in secondary I still have a bit of French from those lessons.

Reduce the religion curriculum and make it education not instruction, use the extra time to focus on science and maths.

Maths to a university level would not be possible in the time allocated to it in Secondary school. We can barely manage to get people doing honours level, let alone a University curriculum.

Maths and English should definitely remain compulsory for Leaving Cert. Both are essential in almost anything you do really.

Why not go all out and abolish Secondary School after the Leaving Cert?

Eliminate religion, then teach science for the love of God? And do it all in Irish because English should be abolished?
How amusing. Methinks Sir's been hitting the cooking sherry hard during the three weeks' holidays.

    Agreed.

Also, a rubber with a smiley face drawn on it that has been stabbed a lot with your compass.......pfft a compass, that's what every kid needs in school....am I right!

Freeing up the religion time will not give enough spare time to cover science and Mandarin.

Given that we'll be spending quite a few hours studying Irish, not to mention an entire day being set aside for it, we could let the 'fecking foreigners' do science and Mandarin then. Come back to me in 30 years and we'll see how it all turned out :P.

As in no 3rd level English? While I don't see the much point in studying English in college, personally, it's not the most useless college degree and people can do what they like at third level really.

    I never said that

And a protractor, what the hell was all that about? How do undo a bra strap with one hand, now that's proper education.

Go f*ck yourself with your Mandarin Chinese. I'm studying to be a primary teacher and I know for a fact most people would drop out if they had to learn how to teach that bullsh*t. Kids find English and Irish hard enough let alone some f*cking gibberish that they will most likely never need nor want to speak... I agree with focusing more on Irish though...good looks. It pains me seeing the neglect, hate and lack of teaching of Irish. And same with the science. I see that the kids absolutely love it as they can become engaged with it through practical lessons and experiments and they can bring in their prior knowledge. There is such a positive buzz from everyone when there is science going on.

Abolishing PE is a joke tbh. If anything it needs to be the opposite. Such a release of stress and pressure from the strains of school and you could talk for days about the health benefits. We had it in 6th year and honestly it was so beneficial towards the end of the year and nearing exams where you could chill out and chat to people as you couldn't during class or whatever.

If maths and science were taught a lot more, it'd seriously be my idea of torture. :(

And abolishing PE, really? I loved it. :P

Yes you did, before you edited your post it said "Abolish English after secondary school". It was a typo anyway, so never mind.

Yes Irish is our culture, but it is extremely pointless language to be studying. Most jobs require a foreign language that is actually spoken in another country. PayPal in Dundalk could not get native Irish people to fill the jobs that required other languages with English, therefore we should help focus pupils for the future. Irish should have a part, but not the amount of hours it receives.

Why abolish English after the Junior Cert? Have you seen some of the ability of our students writing even when they leave school?

Abolish P.E, are you mad? We need to get pupils exercising and also allow them to see the benefits in working out. P.E needs reform not abolishment.

Who are you, OP? Are you one of those "special" advisors to an overpaid minister who can't do his own job for a grossly inflated salary?

Abolish English and PE? Have all kids with university standard of maths? Even the bricklayers, plumbers and hairdressers?

More PE. Not less, and do their spellings while doing PE. Applied maths should be the norm. If you want more then do the funky honours stuff. Irish is great and all but is not worth a fcuk once you leave school. Religion is a disease and should be banned. Teach kids the value (or lack of) money instead. Make school hours match my ****ing working ours so i'm not broke paying creche to mind them while i'm working my hole off to pay for this whole goddamn operation on top of the useless ****ing dole lifers that get everything handed to them. *****. Should be lined up and executed.
