I will be traveling from bootertown to pearse st return, daily mon to fri for work.
What is the best type of fare to get? Daily, weekly, monthly etc? Leap card?
I've read about tax saver, would that be of benefit to me?

If you pay higher rate of income tax then check the cost of other tickets (for ~48 weeks a year) versus the cost of the yearly DART ticket.

Where else do you travel to?

What about weekends / holidays / bank holidays?

Do you use Nitelink / Airlink?
    Leap card?
Be careful. At the moment, Leap Card is best for occasional use, not daily use. Cost would vary from about €1,008 (2 trips a day, M-F, 48 weeks a year) to €1,529 (2 trips a day, 7 days, 52 weeks a year). Admittedly, you have a relatively short journey, so Leap works to your advantage in some ways.

For season tickets, you have to choose between bus, train and bus+train. Annual tickets would work out cheapest - but cost €1,120 for bus or rail (€1,420 for both) less any tax you get back. So if you pay tax at the higher rate, it would cost €537.60 (€681.60 for both).

Using Irish Rail 7 day tickets would cost €1,020-1,220 - **NO** tax back, but greater flexibility.

Using Dublin Bus Rambler tickets (days need not be consecutive) would cost €1,000-1,200, but would become €1,520 to €1,825 if you were to also use the bus on weekends, holidays, etc. - **NO** tax back, but greater flexibility.

The Irish Rail fares are slightly confused - I'm not certain what band the trip falls into - the band Irish rail state may be inconsistent with the distance.

Surely it would be a no brainer to get an annual rail pass costing less then half after tax?

The OP hasn't said how long they'll be doing it for though but yeah if it's for a year the annual ticket is more than likely the best option, it'll also allow them the freedom to used Darts not just for work.

Not meaning to derail the thread, but it's a short distance have you considered the bike to work scheme and cycling in?
    Apologies for the pun!

    Hi everyone
Thanks for the info, it will be a daily commute (return) for work 5 days per week.
Since posting i have found out my employer do the tax saver but only on yearly tickets and the next submission date is April.
So I need to figure out the most cost effect from today until April time....
    Thank you

Buy the monthly for the few months until you get the ticket.

I didint want to start a new thread for this:

I will be getting the DART for one week between Greystones and Connolly/Grand Canal. I want to buy a one week ticket-

Do i have to have an Irish Rail ID?
Do i have to purchase it on my first day of travel or can i get it in the station in advance?
Can i buy it from the ticket machine and if so can i use my debit card?

    Thanks in advance!

You can buy a weekly short hop rail only ticket for €37 with no ID required, valid Sunday to the following Saturday.

There is also a Rambler 5 day ticket available from Dublin Bus without the need for ID which costs €25 and covers all journeys including Airlink and Expresso.

You can buy a weekly ticket from a machine,
You can use a debit card if its visa etc
    You dont need ID .
If you buy it from a machine then it will be from the time you bought it, if you buy it from a booking office, they might be able to date it for you.
All the info you want can be found on Irishrail.ie.

Be careful on the ID thing - some weekly tickets need it, some don't.

Foggy gives you the best option for the week at €37.
Dont worry about id but if you ever need one then its easy enough to get and costs nothing.

Just be aware that buying a point to point weekly ticket will still cost €37 for that journey but will limit you to unlimited travel between those 2 stops only while the weekly rail ticket can be used on all services within the short hop(outer) zone.

    Cheers guys,

Just got back from getting a 'Adult Weekly Short Hop Zone' ticket for €37, but its states that i need to write my CIE ID number on it, can i just ignore that?

No - You need a CIE ID Card with that ticket.

Ahh...., it was the only option at the machine.

How likely is it that it would be checked? I would just be going Greystones to Connolly.

Sorry - I deleted my post - It appears from the Dublin Bus website that you don't need it but I am open to correction.

    Ask at the station!

Weekly Tickets are valid for one week from Sunday to Saturday.

Photo ID Card required for Adult tickets except in the Short Hop Zone. Available at any Iarnród Éireann Booking Office, on production of passport-sized photograph.

My reading of this is that i wouldn't need i ID as i will be in the 'Short hop Zone' at all times. Sure il see what happens tomorrow! Cheers for the input from everyone, i wouldn't be a regular public transport user :)

Pick up a photo id in Connolly when you are passing through even if you dont need one. It only takes a minute to do and it will do no harm to have one and may be of use in the future.
