Why an IMG yellow folder file for each photo?

Of late, whenever I transfer photos from my camera (Canon 600D) to this laptop a yellow file folder comes with each photo. For instance IMG 4558 exists, but alongside it is also a yellow file folder entitled "IMG_4588.JPG.files". What causes this, and is it OK to delete all of these from the laptop folder? (they're taking up a fair amount of space/making the folders look messy). Thanks.

I have two educated guesses why this is:

    1. when you take a raw photo, and view it on the screen on the back of the camera, your not actually viewing the raw file, but actually a smaller jpg. This folder could be that, or contain that.

    or, more likely

    2. you have set the camera to capture both RAW and jpeg. The IMGxxx file is the raw image, and the directory contains the jpeg version of the image.

What are you using to import the photos? Are these files there on your camera originally or are they appearing once the files are imported?

I've got a 600D and I've never experienced this. To me it sounds like whatever way you're importing the photos is doing something silly to them

On the 600D the jpeg and raws just sit one after another with no extra files. The folder could be the viewing program creating a small thumbnail for the image and holding it in there
