Advice/Help needed for electrical problem - Mazda 626

    Hello all,

Both my hazard lights and my horn stopped working over the Christmas period. I started to try and track down the cause today but am unsure as to where the problem actually lies.

When I press the hazard button there is no sound at all even though both indicators are working fine. The 15 amp fuse marked HAZARD in the engine bay is fine and I swapped it with another just to be sure. I located the indicator relay under the steering wheel. It's the one in the back right hand corner with the blue male connector going into the cream coloured female.

I removed the relay and as the indicators are selected, it works fine. When I hit the hazard switch there is no noise, no movement. I can't determine from the Haynes manual whether or not the relay for the indicators is the same as the one for the hazard lights.

What would be my next step? Remove the switch from the dashboard? If so, is anyone anyway familiar with what I might need to remove and in what order on this Mazda 626 dash?

I have the Haynes manual but it's for the American model and the whole interior set-up is different, (as are most other components as far as I can see!).

Secondly - the horn. I cannot find a fuse anywhere for the horn, either in in the engine bay or in the small fuse box under the bonnet release handle. Here's the engine fuse box.

When I press the horn, there is no sound at all. I cannot hear a relay or switch clicking. I removed the horn itself and ran a lead directly from the battery and it is working fine.

Would anyone have an idea if these two problems could be connected or where I could go from here?

Thanks for reading and for any advice.

    Quick update.
Haven't gotten to the bottom of the problem yet however I have some more info. I put my multimeter across the fuses in the engine bay to get some readings. With the hazard switch turned off there is still a reading of 2.5 volts across the fuse. When I turn the switch on it reads 12v. I notice that other circuits, for example the headlights etc, only have a voltage of 0.4 when they are not turned on.

Secondly, there is an aftermarket LaserLine alarm system installed in the car by the first owner. I never activate it (the car is pretty old and not much of a target for thieves any more). When I pulled the BTN fuse under the bonnet, the next time I opened the car door the alarm went off. The hazard lights were also flashing. I replaced the long-dead batteries in the alarm fob today and when the alarm is switched on or off the hazard lights blink. I put the multimeter across the hazard fuse as I was activating the alarm but it doesn't change. The voltage remains at 2.6v even when the lights flash.

Maybe they bypassed the hazard light switch when they installed the alarm?

It is dark now so I'll come back to it again tomorrow I hope. If I put the multimeter across the relay where the indicators are and see if the voltage changes, both when I press the switch and when I activate the alarm, that might narrow down the cause of the problem.

I haven't tackled the horn yet.

If anyone has any light to shed on this I'd appreciate it. I'll bring it to a garage or auto-electrician if I have to but cash is tight so would live to sort it myself if I can. I'll post back with any further details.

    Thanks
