    So the stick does appear to establish a connection, steady blue light, but router doesn't seem to recognise connection or be able to work with it.

    Want to use HG556a as WiFi access point and place where 3 signal is strongest.
    thanks

    A few lines from settings.conf Maybe changes here would help?

    I doubt it will ever work unless you can do a serious firmware regrade of the E353, plugged into a PC the 3IRL version it sets itself up with an NDIS connection and becomes a NAT router putting the PC on a 192.168.1.x subnet. Other version of the E353 work differently just like the older style of dongles so if you can flash the firmware with that from an E353 that doesn't have the HiLink technology it might work?

    Did some digging around and best I could come up with were some solutions that DD-WRT and other Linux users have used google huawei E353 expose serial interface for links. No idea if any of that works directly with you router but if you want to try DD-WRT on the HG566a and then try and make the changes to expose the serial interface on the E353 here's a good place to start http://wiki.openwrt.org/toh/huawei/hg556a .

    @eirator:Thanks

    Would an unlocked E220 run without having to flash the router.

    Flashing routers is not for me today. Wiki says a lot of the E220 are operator branded/locked. See them in Ads from €10 upwards - unlocked.

    E220 will run on anything and is supported on every 3G router I've ever used.

    Unlocking on them is quite trivial, the unlock code is stored unencrypted in the firmware so its just a matter of looking at the right location reading the number and feeding it back to the dongle with the Huawei unlocking program.

    A tenner is the max they are worth as they are a slow old dongle that will do 7.2Mbps down with the latest upgrade (orignally they were 3.6Mbps) but are always stuck on the older slower upload speeds. Don't forget you need the little USB cable (if you've not got a load already) for E220 as they don't plug straight into a USB slot.

    These are the speeds I was getting with super- fast E353 :rolleyes:
    Download is first on left
    1. "1.25","2.30","57"
    2. "1.15","2.35","92"
    3. "1.15","2.35","9
    I will try a 2nd hand E220, not a lot to loose.

    Thanks for letting me know dohouch. So I take it you haven't gotten the E353 to work successfully then with the router?

    @emereld: No, but I'm a real beginner.

    Well it all works, sort of. Can't compare it to anything so I don't know if it's worth anything to anybody else. Didn't have to unlock the Voda router, the WiFi connection worked as well. It looks as if often when you change settings on the router, the router jams and a few restarts are necessary. So it's an unlocked E220 (originally from Three), a free Meteor Test DATA SIM ( thanks Meteor, think it's 24Hours and 500MB), a standard unflashed Voda HG556a, and I bought a TP-Link Wireless N USB Adapter TL-WN722N for the PC.
