Looking for amplifier advice

Hello all. First of all I hope my thread is not breaking the 'no commercial talk' ruler, but I'm not looking to buy anything here, just asking for advice.

I own a guitar (esp ltd mh-50) and I need an amp. Now, I will be using it only in my room so it doesnt have to be powerful (i'm sure 10w will be enough).
I want to spend ~200 euro on it and I'd probably like to buy it in one of the shops in Dublin.

Can someone help me choose? (if it means a big difference in quality I could add 50e to the price)

    Cheers.

Don't worry, this doesn't break the rules - talking about what to buy is what we do here mostly!

What kind of style of music do you want to play with the amp?

Off hand I can think of quite a few in that price range. You'll also have to decide if you want a tube amp, solid-state or a modelling amp.

If you're not sure what the difference is, then let us know and I'm sure someone will explain.

ravelleman is spot on, having said that a quick search of adverts reveals this

i've not played through one but it does potentially tick a lot of boxes!

i think there is a lot more value secondhand, adverts has been good to me in the past

That champ would be great, also the VHT Special 6. Judging by the guitar you have I'd say a nice distortion pedal along with one of those would be a good investment.

I'm just a beginier when it comes to playing the guitar and I'm not focusing on one style of music. I mean, I'd like to play rock (led zep, acdc) maybe some heavier stuff (metallica, iron maiden), maybe some punk (clash, ramones, pistols), Clapton (hah..i wish:P).

Have a look at the box vt 20 + amp. You can buy a pedal if you like all for about €200. I think it's about as good as it gets at that price.

As another option, you could go with something like a line6 pod or even a pocket pod. Very versatile, great range of tones, and if you don't intend to play with others, you can use them with headphones or connected to normal speakers.

If it were me, I'd get a pocket pod second hand, and save the rest of the money until you've nailed down what you want (although from the bands you've mentioned it sounds like you want a hot-rodded marshall JCM 800 :) ). When you move on to play with other musicians (read: a loud drummer), a €250 amp won't cut it for you, but you will have €250 (or more) saved to put off the price of a nice tube amp.

Just my 2 cents on this

    +1

Good suggestion. Headphone output to stereo input. Many amps for little money. And portable.

Good idea. Never thought of that.

Maybe try an interface that links you up to your pc and provides lots of options (all be it through headphones) and saves you paying out twice for amps because ,as was said earlier, you will never ever have enough power once you get going in a band situation. I have ,among others ,a small Behringer for messing about in the quiet of my computer den and am only allowed to plug in to a big amp when the dragon has gone shopping. Heres a link to what I'm on about, lotsa fun for notsa lotsa money...

I hooked up the cable from rock smith thro PC and audacity. Works well enough except for a delay in the sound ( I don't mean delay effect). It's a bit off putting.

That's the downside of going the PC route - latency. You can get sound cards with ultra low latency, but the POD would be a lot cheaper (albeit less versatile)
