Relationship between screen size and 3D effects

I remain totally unconvinced by 3D effects but have enjoyed them on occasion. The 3D in Avatar really blew me away, while I thought Hugo, The Hobbit and even some gimmicky films like Jackass 3D used the effect well. However, I will normally see a film in 2D rather than 3D, particularly if it was filmed in 2D and converted in post.

Having said all that, I was really looking forward to seeing The Life of Pi after all the positive reviews about the effects. I went to see it in Cineworld on screen 8. If you're not familiar with the screen - it's probably one of the smallest in the cinema. The 3D effects were some of the worst I've ever seen. It barely looked 3D at all. The only conclusion I can come to is that the screen size was the problem.

Has anyone else experienced this - are there other factors which I haven't considered?

Definitely makes a difference imo, I saw Life of Pi on a huge screen and it has the best use of 3D since Avatar.

Renovated our house a few years ago and replaced our old CRT tv,s and old plasma with new flat panels. 3D was on the market at the higher end at at time but I knew it was a waste of time on screens that size unless you were sitting on top of them. Bought at the lower end based on that.

Our home based 3D jollies awaits the purchase of our next Home-Cinema projector when our current one dies and home finances have recovered from the recession.

For 3D in a home environment with 12ft seating distances even a 50 or 60 inch doesn't cut it IMHO. 11ft screen or naught!! :D

Certainly when our current flat panels need replacing 3D will be a ubiquitous feature across the ranges if it isn't already. Even then, it'll be a feature we don't use on them. No point.

A big screen is always a plus but the best 3D I have seen has been on a 23" monitor and a 46" TV.

Back home this week and my dad bought a smart TV on which 3D is a feature and playing some Uncharted 3 and watching The Art of Flight in 3D I was blown away by how good it looked. It was a far more immersive and enjoyable experience that most trips to the cinema and I'm looking forward to watching Dredd again in 3D when I'm home next.

I went to see Life of Pi in Screen 4 in The Odeon Stillorgan and the effects weren't all great at all in my opinion.

The screen was tiny and there was a green emergency exit sign high up on the wall that lit up a large section of the screen which was very distracting.

I left feeling kind of disappointed as I heard that the 3D was suppose to be amazing in the film so I'd probably say that the screen size was more then likely the problem.

From my opinion the size of screen does make a difference. I saw The Hobbit is 3d 48fps in IMC in Tallaght on one of their smaller screens and I found the 3d action quite blurry. The missus didn't get a chance to go with me so I brought here to the showing in Dundrum the other night. It was in screen 1 there and I found the 3d experience to be far better. On the whole I don't like 3d as I believe it detracts from the film. That said the missus really enjoyed the effects in the Hobbit and said she like me didn't feel the 3 hours pass by (well we hit the jacks before the film as well which helped!).
