    hi all,
long time lurker, 1st time poster in arcade and retro :)
ive been messing around with mame on my windows 7 machine.
i have extracted the files to the roms folder.
when i run the audit though, it only finds some of the games that are in the roms folder. ie maybe 6 out of the 10 games are listed after the audit.

so i can only play some of the games... is there something im missing.?
    thanks

    You can leave them zipped.
Some games require a parent rom to work.
    And some just dont work!

Some also require BIOS roms to work.
    Some require CHD folders too.

You's be best off downloading a full rom set for your version on mame.
A quick google and you should find a torrent ;)

How big is the current set now?

About 260GB for the roms and chd's (about 280GB with all the extra files).

1/4 of a Terrabyte...insanity :D Leaving aside the CHD's which are largely useless, what does the size come in at roughly?

    28.2gb without the chds

Thats madness. I wouldn't mind, but over 250GB of that isn't playable

Yeah, buts it's nice to stretch the legs of the bband every so often :)
I grabbed it last night and will do a bit of random testing but the games I like to play always work anyway.
I've an older version of MAME running on my Hyperspin setup in the cab and don't see the need to update that any time soon.

The majority of the CHD ones don't though, & they're the ones that pump up the size. I used to be a bit collectory about having a full set all the time, the novelty wears off though when you see how broken mame gets on each release.

Yeah, most CHD games are fecked or work on one version and not on the other. I rarely play games that use CHD's anyway (except SF3 3rd strike and a few other fighters that have working CHD's) but I like to have the latest set there anyway (and I've all the previous version should I need them as well).
