    So,

I'm in first year in Product Design and well so far its all going grand. Christmas exams have just started and well ... they are going grand. Have a question though. Do your results in your semester exams actually matter or are you grand just so long as you pass ?

My course is 4 years and I come out with a Bachelor of Science Degree. Each year is worth 60 credits and after the 4 years ill be able to get my degree. I do not see where doing well in your semester exams would come into it ?

    Can anybody help ?

1st and 2nd year in science don't generally count so long as you pass. Third and fourth year are the ones that count.

Well, if it's BSc, I'd imagine it follows the same rules as any other BSc degree (i.e. first and second year results don't count, 45% required to pass third year)

If you have a work placement in 3rd year you'd want to have decent marks, much easier if you can prove your hard working

I have a 6 month placement in Semester 2 of 3rd year. I could see how that would deffinatley make a difference!

I feel very strangely obliged to point out that there are companies you may come across, at some point during your life, who will ask you for a transcript. That will contain all of your marks from every year. I mention it because I was the type who always asked for one, as were the companies I used to work for. If you just slide through doing just enough to pass, someone's eventually going to ask you in an interview why you did eff all in first year, second year, and only after that started putting the effort in. It's something people don't seem to consider.

As a fellow PD'er your degree result is made up of either partially third and forth year results or fully forth year, whichever gives you a better overall grade.

Also, as outlined above, when applying for placement the industrial placement office encourage you put all modules and results since first year on your application. I find this slightly irrelevant unless the company specifically ask for it, however typically companies look for a 2:1 or above.

Although that may seem tough, alot of the design based pd modules in first and second year are easy to do well in if you are committed and apply time to projects.
