Getting a lump sum of €12k at some stage this year and going to spend it on a new car. Have an 02 Focus at the min which is pretty much worthless as a trade in so what can people recommend for €12k.

Drive about 15k miles a year and looking for something no more than 1.4 in engine size as i dont want to be spending any more than €400 a year on tax. Is a 09/10 Focus my best bet? Want something as new as possible and something which is cheap to run and wont be giving me much trouble. Any ideas?

Any interest in something like this?

    http://www.carzone.ie/search/Honda/Jazz/1.4-I-VT/31713572917334260/advert?channel=CARS

Great little family car, very practical and has plenty of options like glass roof, climate, cruise control, super cheap to run and one of the most reliable cars out there.

Thanks but not for me. Have no kids yet and only early 30's and that seems like a car for an older family man

I get ya. Its very handy for kids/hauling crap around, but not exactly the sportiest number!

Focus' are a good car alright. Try and stick with pedril though rather than going for modern complex diesels. Any savings in fuel/tax will be outweighed by an inevitable diesel issue.

Check out the Fiat bravo, they make cracking Turbo petrols. The one below is just one example, there is a 150 hp t-jet too.

Road tax is only 385 a year.

And Fiat is not like Fiat of old, Seriously at this price you can't go far wrong, convert to LPG and you have really cheap motor to run and cheaper than a 50 mpg Diesel to fuel ! LPG can be got around 84 c/L. In Kilcullen.

In the What Car survey 2012, Fiat came 9 places ahead of Audi for reliability.

Most diesels will have mad high mileage too, the Bravo only has 32,000, to me it's a no brainer.

You know the tax system changed in 2008 and it's now based on emissions, not engine size?

Wouldnt have interest in a Fiat to be honest. Dont like them and everyone gives out about them.

I know it changed alright but is there any website which gives the tax of all cars from 2008 onwards?

While it may be stereotyping, it's actually a car for a post menopausal woman.

    Why eliminate ? I thought you said 400 ?

350/400 max. I didnt realise i could tax a 2.2 litre car like the civic above for less than 400 which is why i can eliminate the 1.4 max engine size

Nice car but the 1.4 tsi vag engines had lots of problems, even the fiat 1.4 turbos don't give nearly as much trouble, + the Bravo only had 32000 miles.

Sadly the OP doesn't want a Bravo hence why I didn't waste my time stating otherwise and put up a TSI instead

If it were me, I'd pick the T-Jet everytime (surprise surprise)

Dont expect much off that price either. Tried buying a civic ictdi for the mother there, wouldn't budge more than €200 on the already pricey secondhand stuff

Thanks for all the suggestions so far lads and enlightening me about that website for checking the price of tax on cars. Only other thing i forgot to mention is i will need 4/5 doors as i will be keeping the car for about 6 years and will probably have a kid by then. And the newer the car the better

What do u think is a reasnable offer for it? Might be a consideration if we trade down one of the motors
