    Hello,

Can anyone tell me if Red Dot Sights are any good for use on a shotgun? The things I'm reading on various websites seems to say they're ok on shotguns. Does anyone recommend a certain make or type etc. I am assuming they are legal here in Ireland? They sell them in the UK, but of course that doesn't mean they're legal here. Any thoughts on the above would be most welcome.

    Regards

Yes they are legal, Whether or not you like them is going to be down to personal choice. I like them and have an Aimpoint on my rifle at the moment it works great. You will need to get a good quality one if it is going on a shotgun. I have thought about using mine on my shotgun i have yet to though, I need to get a rail first. But i would imagine it would be good.:)

Best Red Dot for shotguns in my opinion is Redring, since this is the only really specific Red Dot for this purpose. Check their website.

Thanks for that info on Redring. They look the business and am sure they would be great for me - the only downside is the price, $900 or £675 ouch, not sure I can justify that sort of outlay.

    Cheers.

There are a lot of red dots made especially for shot guns so be sure to get one made for the job as the recoil will reck it in no time, not sure about the Redring wouldnt be my choice a real bugdet red dot you do get what you pay for.
The Burris Speed Bead is a better and proven alternative. And at a third of the cost

A love/hate thing on shotguns. I've tried them and really see no practical advantage to them that a decent luminious bead or Tru glow site wouldnt do for half the money and less worries .
Handy on a rifle for brush hunting or snap shots, where you need to get a shot out fast, and havent got time to line up front and back sites..Maybe on the shotgun if you are hunting with slugs ,[Wherever you could do that here?].
FWIW ,I'd buy a cheapie chinkie copy of the one you want down in the airsoft place nearest you,and try it out.If you dont like it you are down 50 quid rather than 500 quid.Belive it or not,the chinkie copies will hold up long enough and then some for normal shooting.

You would be breaching the laws on reloading.

More like possesion of restricted ammo..
But TBH people have been making them for years pre celtic tiger, and proably still do if they need them for whatever reasons.

    rsole1,
What do you want to do with it? Which type do you want?

There are the proverbially "red dot" scopes that are usually for close quarter combat. They have little or no magnification. Basically, get the dot on target and pull trigger...

Then there are illuminated reticles, which are often red dots. They are used with various magnifications. Many use them for night time applications such as lamping. I am saving up my coppers for a Nightforce.

I just don't see an application for them on shotguns in Ireland. However, if it is what you want, get it. Have a look at the Burris Speedbead mount.
