Apple TV app remote issue

I have misplaced the apple tv remote that came with my apple tv.

I use the remote app on my iphone to control my apple tv now.

The problem I'm having is if I haven't used my apple tv in a while and it powers down when I open the app it states 'please ensure your home sharing is turned on, on your apple tv and laptop'.

I know for a fact home sharing is turned on because I have been able to turn the apple tv on by pulling out the power socket. When I put it back in the apple tv boots up and I can use the remote app no problem.

The issue seems to be that when the apple tv powers down there is no way to turn the apple tv on using the remote app. When I had the actual apple tv remote I had to press the menu button to make it come on, I can't do this with the app remote because it can't connect with the apple tv when its powered down.

Anyone else had this issue and find a way to resolve it?

You could try teaching the Apple TV to use a spare button on another remote as the menu button?

I don't think there is much you can do as the remote app connects to the Apple TV via wi-fi and if its off then the Apple TV won't be connected to the wi fi.

Thanks that looks like a great solution. My tv remote has a number or buttons I don't use
