In the market for upgrading current estate car.....limited to auto transmission and estate, plus, would be doing below average annual mileage.

Was offered last night a Saab 9.3 1.9 TID Vector Estate for €6,900. Just over the 100k in km and auto, and diesel.

Nice looking car, and my thoughts are that price is ok, but, not a giveaway by any means, as its a 2006.

Any views on the price and the reliability or otherwise on these, as never had or drove Saab's before.

    Thanks

Did 100k in 4 years in 2006 one (manual), before changing to an 05 auto 9-5 in 2012. Zero problems bar 2 shocks at rear 2 drop links at front (crap roads I'd wager..), . Average mpg was about 42mpg. Lovely smooth engine.

Servicing was by local Indy, so not expensive (€180 - € 250), timing belt cost me €410 iirc to do.

When I was changing - the only reason was for an auto - I drove an auto 9-3 and thought the 'box very good compared to an 05 9-5 Auto. I bought a 9-5 instead which has an older, bigger engine (...tax :( ), but car was a good bit cheaper, and the car bigger. The 9-5 returns 36mpg with her in it  and 38mpg+ with me in it. I would suspect the 9-3 would be a bit lighter being more modern, better 'box, smaller engine and probably lighter.

Like everything else, the pool of good used cars here is shrinking, so the €6900 you were asked isn't far off tbh - I got €6200 for my manual, and it needed a DMF at that stage (170k), so a good car is a good car and will sell all day long. Auto's even more so, these days imho.

If you're mileage is very low, a petrol would be an lot cheaper, probably easier to find, and little in the way of extra expense. Probably lower servicing etc too, as with any petrol vs diesel comparison.

A Saab is a Vauxhall Vextra.

Loads of Saab threads here already, use the search with "Saab 9.3 1.9 TID Vector Estate" to get a flavour for it.

If you are driving below average mileage, do not buy a diesel.

Seems overpriced to me. I'd be offering closer to €5000-€5500

As some one said if you are doing below average mileage the TID isnt for you

With a finite pool of cars, the price is whatever the market will bear.

You're right about the diesel - esp in town : petrol would be better. Lots of low mileage / slow driving does not suit modern diesels, although auto's have an advantage in that they run at higher rpm, more often, due to the auto 'box.

How low is your 'low' mileage btw ?

A Saab is not a Vectra, although I used to assume it was too.

Wow, that is low. Forget diesel, full-stop.

Older, I know, but if condition is good, and history good, see this: http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/4304826

    More petrols, but newer:

I like this: you'd get a warranty and you could haggle as well - low mileage too:

Thanks, some nice examples there. I know my annual mileage is very low, so won't be accumulating on the clock, but, at what point, with a petrol, should you be getting nervous with the mileage. Only have experience with diesels. Want this car to last +6 years anyways ?

    Thanks again

At your mileage that's only 48k........no reason why a petrol maintained properly shouldn't do 200k.

My brother is on his 4th petrol one, and he puts big miles on all of them.

    .

A common misconception by those who really haven't a clue. They share an engine block, a few minor suspension parts, the same wheel PCD and very little else.

Thanks for that, on the assumption that "those who really haven't a clue" includes me; your courtesy and kindness is much appreciated, though I know enough not to buy either of them.

I agree, totally unfair on Opel the way it gets compared to Saabs all the time.
