Which country must you complete initial class 1 in?

    First time poster long time lurker.

    I just have a quick question for some of the experienced guys on here. Do you have to complete your flight training in the country you complete your initial class 1 medical in? (ie. if I complete my initial class 1 in Gatwick due to concerns about my eyesight, can I then return to Ireland and complete my flight training here?)

    The IAA require you to have had your initial Class 1 done in Ireland if you wish to train here, or certainly they used to, not aware of any change in that. May be best to contact them and ask for the definitive answer.

    As an aside, as far as I am aware the CAA in the UK will accept an Irish Class 1 for training.

    Thats a JAA rule, not specific to the IAA.

    All the medical and standards is in a transition period changing from JAR to EASA.

    If you have a EASA EU Class 1, it has to be accepted in all EASA countries.

    I have never held a IAA class 1, but held a UK CAA class 1 and renewed it last month and was issued a EASA EU class 1.
    The Uk caa class 1 was accepted for the ATPL exams/signing up to a modular course.
    The UK issued EASA class 1 that i did last month has been accepted by the Swedish CAA and this is where i will be doing my training. you just get the medical records transferred over, but your cert if fine

    Under EASA the 'State of Licence Issue' concept applies. The country that holds your medical records is your SOLI and any licences must be issued by that state. You can change your SOLI, but you must also change your licences to those issued by the new state. You can do your training and testing in any EASA state, providing the examiner has been briefed by your SOLI CAA.

    My medical has always been IAA. Class two years ago when I did my PPL and Class one a few years ago for commercial and still to this day.

    However, my licence (PPL, CPL, ATPL) have always been UK CAA issued. My address is in Ireland.

    Never had a problem.
