Have a sky dish in new place, don't want a Sky sub though.

    What is my best option.

Would like BBC ITV Film4 and all those so what receiver is best to link to the sky dish or is there another option?

    Thanks!

    Hi,

You could get a Set Top Box like the Ariva 150 which will provide you with BBc, ITV and Film 4 etc

Im not saying its the best, but it is cheap ad does the job ell.

    Anymore questions, please just ask.

    Regards

Thanks for that, I wouldn't mind paying a few extra for a higher spec - EPG guide etc. Is the 150 the best or are there higher end products? :)

Well it depends what you want exactly, you dont mention if you want Irish Terrestrial stations at all - you seem to just want the British ones.

Also the Ariva does have EPG as far as I know.

You can check with Tony on the Ariva 150 thread, he is a retailer who sells them - I think hi website is www.Satellite.ie

If you're happy enough with UK channels only, try to get a Freesat branded receiver. This will give you a proper 7-day epg. You will also get proper recording ability & series linking, if you go for a PVR version.

The combi boxes, such as the Ariva 150/250 have a tuner for terrestrial broadcasts (such as Saorview), but you'll need a UHF aerial, of a type suitable for reception conditions at your location. These receivers will have the full epg for terrestrial channels, but only 'now & next' for satellite.

You always explain it so much better than me :)

    Thanks lads.

Sorry, yeah would want Irish channels too. Suppose I took it as a given but shouldn't have what with the digital changeover.

Would it be madness to have two boxes - one for free sat and one for Irish saorview channels?

Would really like 7 day guide and recording for British channels.

Nothing wrong with 2 boxes, to get the best of all worlds. What is the make & model of your tv? It might be able to decode the Saorview signal.

    It's a LG LED Smart TV - 42LS575T

In that case could you recommend the best saorview box with record function if possible and free sat box with epg and record?

    Many thanks again!

Im nearly sure that thats saorview but Ill let Peter answer with his recommendations.

Personnaly I dont care about EPG (I never record programmes or such like) so I just use the combo box

That tv should work alright with Saorview, although it's not on the approved list.

The only proper Saorview approved PVR I'm aware of is this Walker model, which doesn't even seem to be available yet. The cheaper single-tuner boxes will provide recording via usb connected external storage & you could watch another channel on the tv, while recording.

The Humax Foxsat HDR seems to be the best regarded Freesat PVR.

Some parts of the country can also get UK terrestrial (Freeview) reception & that tv will receive the Freeview HD channels.

Lads thanks again for the advice! Will have a look when I set it up and go from there! Will try the combo or more than likely the Humax Foxsat!

    Thanks!

    Hey there,
just to let you know that tv ls575 is fine for saorview channels and also it has a pvr built in so you can record straight from your tv so all you need is a freesat box for all the english stuff

    Thanks tombom!

I have been looking around house and a bit of an issue. Can't seem to install any channels on the LG tv. Have the antenna connection in sitting room plugged in. There seems to be an aerial on the roof but could it be disconnected? The house has UPC boxes screwed to the wall in 3 rooms so obviously they were using UPC previously. When I went to the attic there is a little white box with two connections and is plugged in - again this appears to be UPC equipment. Then there are two cables hanging down in attic not connected at all. I assume these were from Sky dish on the roof and UPC disconnected them.

    Anyone have an idea???!

White box in attic - dont know what this is, perhaps a pic might help

Have you got a sky dish on the roof at the moment?

Also, you know you cannnot get the UPC stations without a UPC box - the white UPC box on the wall does not plu straight into your TV

It doesn't have a 'built-in' PVR: you need external USB-connected storage (afaia, it only works with a HDD). TV only has a single tuner, so any 'watch & record' functionality will be limited, but this probably won't matter with the limited no. of Saorview channels that are ever likely to be available.

Yes there is a Sky box on roof but Im assuming that the two free hanging wires in the attic are Sky.

Ya I know you need a UPC box to decode and I haven't even gone near the connections to be honest but was just thinking out loud that UPC appears to be the previous occupiers TV option of choice, hence me deducing that Sky and/or aerial was disconnected?

I will get a pic up ASAP of white box.

    Thanks lads!

No harm to post a pic of the aerial too. Do you know if you're in a cabled or MMDS ('wireless cable') area? MMDS uses a mesh dish-type aerial with central feed. This kind of aerial is no use for Saorview.

When you say Sky Box on the roof - do u mean a Sky dish?

Have you bought a Set Top Box yet?

Yep i didnt mean to put it that way but yeah your right has to be a hard disk, i think your goin to have to route out the cables see where they go, but as long as you can find them you can reuse them so you should'nt have run them again to your tv room just connect up in the attic
