    From the sounds of it, as the crack is wider at one end than the other and it has not changed since the building was constructed, then it's most likely to be settlement.

    But the usual disclaimer applies, in other words seek, the advice of an engineer if the problem is progressing.

    Thanks lads, any input is greatly appreciated, I tend to agree with you dolanbaker, its just that for the purposes of this project i have to explore every avenue, thats what brought me here seeking advice from people more experienced than i am
