Well muckit im far from a big lad and no im not in a purchasing group.I just get at least 3 quotes for everything i buy and lowest quote gets the business.Im an arrabawn supplier and i used to buy from them solely but since concentrates started to creep up i started to shop around and with great success.I currently buy my dairy nuts from roches in limerick,Weanling nuts from kiernan milling/Stewarts and fertliser from Glanbia at the moment and arrabawn.Good to keep them all on there feet

Great rule to have, I'd be along similar lines! A phonecall only takes 30seconds, and could save you 100s. I'd be open minded enough also, say Glanbia often get stick for being rip off merchants, but do come in most competitively priced for some stuff!

Id agree. shopping around, especially over the phone for a few prices is time and call credit well spent ;)

It's gas though, some would stick with buying all stuff from one crowd, even if they were dearer, just for the convenience. I suppose there's something to be said for that too.

Off on a bit of a tangent.. regarding 'brand' loyality....

I heard a very interesting story there lately on the telly about the Pepsi / Coca Cola debate. There was a blind tasting done some years back, and the majority of blind tasters (can't remember the exact figures) preferred Pepsi..... yet after they were armed with this info and pepsi still being cheaper, they still reverted back to drinking Coke!!!

Same scenario could possibly exist with some farmers and they're loyality to certain co-ops, merchants etc :p

Got a price of 440 for Urea, and 310 for Can today in the local Glanbia store. They said the prices could change next week. I read somewhere that the there is plenty on the world market at the minute, and not much demand yet, so prices could ease back soon. Given the weather today it would be washed off the field before ya finished spreading it, so I'll hold out ordering yet ha!
