Insurance excess

    A related question from me.

My son was sent a cheque for a write-off. We understood that when the Engineer assessed the cars value, the excess would be deducted. The problem is that we hoped that would be the end of the matter. However, the scrap value has also been deducted.

Many years ago when I had a similar claim experience on my own comp policy. My point is that the excess value was all that was deducted on that occasion. When I sold that car for scrap, I kept the cash. The insurance company knew that my old car was being purchased by a scrap yard and they did not interfere.

Is there any hope that we can recover the amount of money that was deducted?

Did your son get to keep the car? If so, that's why the scrap value was deducted.

If the inurace paid out for the car, they own the car and sell it for scrap. However, the owner can choose to keep the car and the insurance will then deduct what the highest scrap offer was. Your son kept the car, so the scrap was deducted.
