Nvidia GeForce 310M - Not happy in Win 8!!

    Hi all,

I upgraded my Dell Vostro 3500 from Win 7 to Win 8 a few weeks ago and all went well but yesterday I had a problem installing windows updates. Long story short I did some Google research and two things seemed common to my problem:-

    1. The updates needed to be installed individually rather than as a group. - I did this and all updates are now in place.

    2. Nvidia drivers don't seem to transfer well from Win 7 to Win 8 and are frequently the source of Windows Update problems. - To address this it was recommended to update the driver for my display adapters. This is where I have the problem.

In device manager the display adapters are both showing error prompts, see below

    displayadapters.jpg

When I right click on both of them and click on update driver Windows reports back that the installed driver is the most up to date but when I right click on Intel(R) HD Graphics and select Properties the General Tab states "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39) {Unable to Load Device Driver} %hs device driver could not be loaded. Error Status was 0x%x" and the Resources Tab states "The device isn't using any resources because it has a problem."

Similarly when I right click on the Nvidia GeForce 310M and select properties the General Tab states "This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31)" and the Resources Tab states "The device isn't using any resources because it has a problem."

I've downloaded the Nvidia driver installation app but when it runs it returns an error "NVIDIA Installer Cannot Continue. This graphics driver could not find compatible graphics hardware".

I've also tried rebooting several times and looking for more Windows updates but there aren't any. I looked at rolling back the drivers for each adapter but that's not an option as there aren't previous drivers to roll back to.

The only other thing I can think of doing is to uninstall the drivers all together but that's way beyond by comfort level and I'm afraid I'll end up with no display whatsoever if I do.

I really need some help from my fellow Boardsies if at all possible.

    Cheers,

    Ben

I know it might not be what you want to hear but I would always recommend a clean install of Windows over an upgrade.

Did you download the Nvidia notebook drivers?

Yep, that's what I downloaded and it gave me the "NVIDIA Installer Cannot Continue. This graphics driver could not find compatible graphics hardware" error.

Dell put the GPU onto the motherboard in some weird unique way. On some models you can only install the drivers provided on the dell support site. It's the same with the vostro 3700 I had.

Just downloaded several display drivers and only one installed, an old version of the Intel(R) HD Graphics Driver but it hasn't made any difference. I guess the fact I'm now on Win 8 and Dell doesn't support Win 8 on this Vostro 3500 won't help :(

    Anyone got any other ideas?

    Hi Ducky,

Not having much luck on the Dell Forums, yet anyway.

Would you mind explaining how I re-install the 310 driver if I first of all uninstall it? My concern is that if I uninstall it I'll be left with no screen display driver at all and a black screen!! Do I simply uninstall it via Device Manager and then re-install it via the NVIDIA installation app or by right clicking the 310 adapter in Device Manager and clicking "Update Driver"?

If you uninstall the driver windows will look for one when it is restarted. If you wish to try the win 7 driver you had before the upgrade.device manager-upgrade driver-browse my comp-browse to windows.old-windows-system32and hit ok,windows will find and install the driver from there.

Double clicking the nvidia download will install the driver.

You won't get a black screen you get a default resolution. I'd un-install them then download the 32/64 Win7 ones from the dell site and try them.
