    Scale. Wexford's too small.

Waterford isn't much bigger - which is probably why the Waterford one specifically encourages hen parties on their website, the worst thing that can ever befall a gay bar is a bloody hen party

Based on the % of the popular that are gay/bi, as well as the % of those that would want to go to a gay bar on any given night you'd probably need a town large enough to have 80 bars before there's really enough demand for a gay bar. Less if there's a large college/university I'd guess.

There is fairly vibrant social group

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

Possibly less so outside Dublin but I would have thought that the need for specific gay bars is a dying issue. As homosexuality becomes more accepted the need for specific venues based on sexuality decreases. Looking at the Dublin pub scene and talking to friends, they would far prefer to socialise outside the main gay bars now.
