China - 4 or 5 days?

I have the opportunity to go to China in March, but only have a week off work. Is it worth going or is it just too far for such a short time? It'd take 24 hours to get there with the connections, I'd get there at lunch time, then have 4 full days before having to fly back. It would be a city break type thing. Should I go or should I wait until I can go for longer? The issue is I don't know when/if I'd have the time in the future!

24 hours? It takes about 14-15 hours I would imagine including connections and when you get there the jet lag will kill you. So Id say take as long as possible for you, I would say 5 days excluding flights.

24 hours with the only affordable flight I can find, which leaves me with 4 full days excluding flights. I can't find any better options :(

I went to Australia thia summer for five days, so it's not impossible.
The thing is, there's so much to see in China and four days is such a short time. Then again, if it's a once off chance, I'd go.

You could go to Hong Kong and base yourself there, but real China really begins outside the big cities and you're not really going to get there in just four days.

What city were you thnking of flying to, Beijing?

4 days in Hong Kong would be a nice city break with plenty to see and do. You could even do a day trip to Shenzen. Wouldn't try anything more ambitious.

  • I was thinking Beijing and going to the Great Wall which is only a short distance away, isn't it? So 3 days for the city and a day trip to the wall. I'd love to spend 3-4 weeks but I just can't get the time off work. We were going to go somewhere closer to home but even short haul flights are 200 euros +, so we thought we could spend a bit more and go somewhere we actually wanted to go...

    So indecisive now :(

This is what I would recommend. Take a day for the great wall, I did a 2 hour treck along an unrestored part and it was epic. No tourists at all, just our small group and the guide. You can take is the some of the rest of the sights then on the other 3 days and do a bit of shopping in the markets at the end before leaving if you fancy.

HK and Shanghai are the other options, but Beiijing is probably the best option.
