    Hi There,

My wife is unemployed and i work full time. If i were to claim her tax credits, what is the threshold where i would pay the higher rate of tax. Does anyone know?

    Thanks in advance :-)

This has been covered repeatedly in this forum. Try searching married and tax. But the link below explains all. Your rate band increases to a max of €41,800.

Thanks for that. Do you know if I claim home carers tax credit will this affect my tax band? The leaflet seems to say that it will in some cases and that revenue will apply the more beneficial treatment, but I'm not sure if this applies to me. I did try searching the forum, but could not find an answer applicable to me.

    Hope you can help :-)

It does not affect your rate band. If you claim it, it increases your tax credits but takes away your spouse's remaining rate band. This shouldn't be a problem if your spouse has no taxable income for the year. If in doubt on claiming any additional reliefs, always wait until the end of the tax year to claim it for the preceding year. If its allowable and beneficial to you it will be granted.

Cheers for that, you've been very helpful.
