So instead of the new licence plates reading 13-A-12345 or whatever the county code is, they now read 131-A-12345 because of superstition!

Am I the only one who thinks this is incredibly stupid, it just makes me want to do a massive face palm thing, its embarrassing that people will do this because of a few eejits who wont walk under a ladder or sh1t brix if a black cat walks past.

    Whats your view AH?

    In before stevie wonder...

Utter nonsense, a waste of time, money and sanity.

Should be the option to choose whether you want the 131 or just 13. That way the normal people can be more easily separated from the idiots

Wasn't it also done to promote car sales in the second half of the year? With the old system once the year rolled over, a car was officially a year old. Now at least someone can buy a car in August and it will not devalue as much.
Of course, it could be the government worrying that superstition will stop some people from buying cars, and they currently need every cent they can get.

It's not because of superstition, it's to sell more cars (apparently)

Because everyone knows the reason that no-one buys new cars during and after the summer is because they're waiting for next year, not that they don't have 20+ grand.

Government pandering to the motor trade. Don't know why - every new car sold is another import. Can anyone explain that conundrum? Country broke - send money abroad........

Whatever the reason it's a load of nonsense. Wouldn't be surprised if we're back to 'normal' licence plates by 2014.

Doesnt make sense to me. Next year it will be 14-A-12345 so the 131 brigade will still know they have a year old car even if it was made in August.

    Mind boggling.

Was surprised to see the same today on my way to work, I thought I didn't see it properly! I'd be curious to find out if only 131 numbers are released.

It's just stupid. Nothing more than massaging the figures.

Any increase in sales in the second half of the year is offset by a reduction in sales for January/early year.

I think it's being continued next year so it will be 141 and 142.

The first 6 months it will be 131 and from July new cars will have 132.

This is in response to a request by the motor industry to combat declining car sales.

If you were to buy a car in say, September, it would be a 132 reg. If you tried to sell it in January 2014, people would know it's less than half a year old rather than thinking it's a year old.

Stupid system, no need for it in my opinion but we'll see if it works.

    No

    Next year it will

    141-D-12345, and 142-D-12345

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

Do people not ask for the date of first registration, or even check if the second number is big or small when buying a car?? Mind boggling. Personally I'd avoid buying a new car at all until they change the system back out of principle...

If I was buying a car and wanted to know when it was registered I would just check the log book.

I amazed at how little businesses like the motor industry understand about the laws of supply and demand.

If you have a product that's overselling in January and underselling in Nov/Dec then you price accordingly.

1: Raise prices for Jan: (demand drops, but revenue increases)
2: Continue to drop them to Dec: (demand increases, slight drop in revenue)

It's not rocket science and results in a more even spread of income throughout the year. Far easier and less time wasted than pointless lobbying for reg plate changes.

Whatever they do won't result in increased revenue overall. People aren't sitting on vast heaps of cash ready to spend on gimmicks like this.

Actually, the automotive industry employs a few thousand people in this country, in manufacturing alone.
The company I work for employs about 1000 directly, and I would imagine a few more indirectly.
There are manufacturers of car parts in Galway, Limerick, Cork, Dublin and I'm sure others that I'm not fully aware of.
Granted most of the money from a car does go to a foreign company, but those companies put money back in as well.
If you own a car from Any of the German brands, French Brands, Ford, Jaguar, Land Rover, Seat, Skoda then it is likely that a significant portion of the electronics were designed, developed and possibly manufactured here.
I was surprised at the % when I first started working with my current employer.
I'm not sure about Non-European brands, I know Honda and even Toyota had parts made here at some stage.
At the risk of becoming pedantic the following parts are all made in Ireland.
Window motors and switchgear, Engine looms, ECU and electronics CPU, ancillary looms and harnesses, , Wiper motors, Starter Motors, Spark-plugs, Glow-plugs, Ignition controllers and coil packs, Steering Modules, Airbag controls, Vehicle Managments Systems, Dashboards, Seat belt pre-tensioners, Center consoles, Hybrid charging systems and next gen KERS systems.
Can't think of any more of the top of my head.

But, back OT, this 131/132 is a dumb idea, S.I.M.I. being all clever again, heard a news item today where they were advising people to service their cars as the avg age of a car in Ireland is now 8yrs old. Yeah, no bother I'll send my car to a SIMI garage so I can get fleeced, f**k off!
