You probably wont find too many 9 month training plans however that is not to say that a 9 month build up is not a great approach.

I am assuming you are starting from scratch or do you have any bit of a running background up until this point?

You're already at one of the best. As ecoli says let us know what your background and plans are and we should be able to steer you in the right direction.

No real running background, played the GAA for years but packed it in 2 years ago.
I done a 10km last May, that my one and only run ever, done very very little since.

Maybe for 4 months do a 10k program and then follow a marathon plan. Pick a few races for Feb, mar and April to keep u focus.

Your really want to start by establishing some foundations that you can build from. I'd start by running 3 times a week. Do 2 of the runs at whatever pace you feel like and the 3rd at an easy pace. Your aim is to lengthen the amount of time that you spend running - the distance will take care of itself. The 3rd run you should be aiming to build up to 90 mins. For the other 2 do whatever you feel like pacewise but again look to build up the length of time that you run for. The key for you at this stage is to develop the habit of running. In about 6 weeks you should review how you're getting on. At that point you might want to consider adding another run and perhaps a little more structure or you might want to carry on as you are.

About 6 months out from the marathon is when you want to consider what plan to follow. You'll then spend about 6 - 8 weeks getting yourself ready to start the plan followed by the plan itself.
