Was talking to a local mechanic over the hols. Was telling him about issues re injectors in my car last summer. i was baffled as it was all bought at amber in clonmel and tipp town. He made out that ' most of the diesel' being sold was of a poor enough quality. he felt that topaz was the best place! Anyway I listened away to him but I'm wondering is this auld waffle or is there something to it? We all know about the pitfalls of using the 'nordy' diesel sellers who're cash only, but i'd have thought the likes of esso, texaco, maxol, amber etc should always be ok.

Is there any merit to paying for fuel with cards and keeping the receipts should an issue arise?

Know it's a boring topic but it's fairly important!

Theres all kinds of weird stuff that can be done with fuel.

I have been getting my diesel at Amber in Clonmel for many years and never have had a problem. Noticed a while back, they have a notice saying all their fuel is traceable to good source.

I actually gave up buying in Amber in Clonmel. Every single fill yielded lower mpg. I don't know why and it may have improved in the last while as I haven't been back.

I was thinking that myself! was just wondering what was the perspective from lads who might know more than me-which is zero.
i'm thinking that what may be happening re injectors is that some cars are either having incorrect fuel filters fitted, correct ones aint fitted properly, or maybe some aint changing em at all! The result being that the injectors are being clogged.
i'd imagine that if you've a main dealer service history and fuel receipts the manufacturer should surely stand over it?

Some garages run out and the fuel that gets pumped can be a bit off. I've had running problems that only manifested themselves when filling up in some isolated rural petrol stations, and disappeared on the next fill somewhere near to me.

well i can talk about the 10 cents off per L at tesco . I did two fills over the x mass at their pumps at limerick of 82e and 85e one fill before a full service and another fill after service . I have to say i will NEVER buy from them again was down 100km before service and 120km after service the fuel i got must not be up to much, will be back to texaco/statoil once again.

Definitely there is a difference of quality at the pumps. I too will always clock my mileage per litre and i have seen a difference as much of 70 to 90 mile per fill in some cases.
Same amount of fuel but not the same mileage.
I'd be driving a small diesel van with no weight in it and never driving over 50 mph.
Now i buy at the same place every week and get the same miles every week.

I would advise this, some may think its overboard.

Older diesels are more tolerant of diesel quality, modern common rail less so and are more sensitive. On a modern common rail I would advise OE fuel filter and always do. Also advise to change more regularly than service interval recommend. Repairs to cr diesels can be very expensive.

What sort of place is that?Myself I reckon (although weather changes etc could possibly explain most of difference) that Texaco Monasterevin (the old one ) gave me 5-7mpg more than Esso Kill on Southbound side recently .

I buy from naas oil in kilcullen. I have tried all the newbridge station and i think the maxol station just out on the ballymany road was the best with Fraser oil been the worst and they were the cheapest. But in kilcullen i get the most mpg

No he's not. There is a huge problem with poor quality / contaminated / laundered diesel across the country. We get yokes towed in and limping in daily with clogged filters. Draining the filters reveals all sorts of gloop, dirt, sand, muck and grit. The filter is doing its job, if this stuff hits your common rail and injectors then it will cost €€€€€. Use genuine (or good quality) filters and change very very regularly. It's affecting all brands, all fuel stations, all size engines. Ignore at your peril!
